Research and Statistics in Psychology

Across all science fields, including psychology, research and effective use of statistics is what helps us to make sense of the world. Psychology in particular allows us to understand why we act the way we do as individuals and operative collectively as a society.

Scientists, including psychologists, need to be trained in a range of research methods and data analytics techniques to quantify the phenomena they study. This Learn for Credit course will introduce learners to the scientific methods of research, including an overview of research design and techniques for analysing data, and provide practical experience in collecting and analysing data. 

You can choose to participate in just the in-person workshops, or complete the full course through the workshop, online modules and additional readings and assessment.

For-credit subject

This experience can provide credit towards a university subject. Contact us to find out how students can complete five experiences and apply for credit for one 10cp subject into a Bond University undergraduate degree and obtain two points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

  • This course is delivered via six interactive online modules: 

    • Ethics in Research
    • Research Design
    • Getting Started with Research
    • Processing Data
    • Data Analysis and Interpretation
    • Drawing Conclusions and Communicating Scientifically 

    Students will also complete a two-day practical workshop where they will run their own research project.

    You can choose to participate in just the in-person workshops, or complete the full course through the workshop, online modules and additional readings and assessment.

    Learning time: A total of 24 hours of learning, consisting of: 

    • 6 hours of online modules on the Bond Learner platform
    • 12 hours face-to-face on campus (Gold Coast)
    • 6 hours of additional readings and assessment

  • This course is designed for Year 11 and 12 students interested in psychology, science, or data analysis who want to understand how research helps us make sense of the world. If you're curious about why people behave the way they do, how society operates, or how scientists turn data into discoveries, this course is a great opportunity to build foundational skills.

    Whether you’re considering a career in psychology, science, or any field that relies on data and research, this course will provide valuable knowledge and practical skills to prepare you for future studies.

    • Identify ethical issues in research. 
    • Define the research question, state a research hypothesis, and determine the type of variable in research. 
    • Recognise fundamental concepts of research design. 
    • Demonstrate entry-level knowledge of SPSS data analysis software. 
    • Process and interpret bivariate statistics using descriptive and inferential statistics. 
    • Explore the process of conclusion drawing and communication of research findings.

Assistant Professor Gaelle Brotto

Dr Gaelle Brotto, Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Faculty of Society & Design, specialises in statistics, research methods, and criminology. She is dedicated to transforming student learning through innovative, interactive, and engaging teaching. 

Dr Brotto adopts a personalised, caring and enthusiastic approach, incorporates strategies to reduce student apprehension, especially about statistics, and provides authentic, real-world assessment activities. Her commitment and efforts have been recognised through the achievement of two teaching awards. She is the author of a book chapter and is in the process of writing journal articles in the areas of interpersonal violence, victim-offender overlap, and outlaw motorcycle gangs, and is contributing to the teaching and learning scholarship here at Bond University.
