Scholar stories

Hear from our scholars

If you’re considering applying for a scholarship, you might have questions about the application process, be seeking some application tips, or perhaps are wondering what it’s like to be a Bond scholar. Who is better placed to provide insight than our scholars themselves? With such a diverse group of students making up our scholarship cohort, every student’s journey is unique. Hear from some of our outstanding scholars below.

Madeleine Gillmore - Vynka Hohnen Scholar

"Receiving a scholarship provided me with opportunities at that I could never have imagined during my final year of school. Studying a Bachelor of Design in Architecture has been both challenging and rewarding, and the support of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship network,  including fellow recipients, mentors, and guest speakers, has been invaluable in guiding and inspiring me. The scholarship has also enabled me to gain professional experience through an internship with a major architectural firm in Sydney and to build connections across the industry with the help of the University’s Career Development team."

Tess Cann - Judge John Newton Mooting Scholar

"Studying at Bond has provided me with extraordinary opportunities that have shaped both my academic and personal growth. Through mooting, I have been able to refine my advocacy skills and gain practical insight into how the law operates in real-world contexts. Beyond the classroom, Bond has created pathways for valuable networking and given me the chance to intern and volunteer with leading firms, experiences that have allowed me to build professional connections and apply my studies in practice."

Maximilian Hawkes - Vice Chancellor's Elite Scholar

"The Vice-Chancellor's Elite Scholarship is a catalyst for ambition. For me, it provided the confidence to undertake a double degree in Law and Actuarial Science, allowing me to immerse myself in the Bond community and pursue opportunities I never would have imagined after leaving school. Through the scholarship, I’ve connected with a network of inspiring, like-minded peers. I have also had the opportunity to work with a personal mentor in the legal industry and build relationships with alumni, who are always willing to lend a hand. The scholarship has done more than just support my studies financially; it has shaped my personal and professional journey at Bond."

  • 2016 Vice Chancellor’s Elite scholar

The Vice Chancellor Elite Scholarship is so much more than a tuition scholarship. As a Vice Chancellor's scholar, you are connected with mentors, welcomed to events with industry leaders, and presented with limitless opportunities to lead and develop the skills that you do not learn in a classroom, preparing you for a successful career. The mentor I was paired with was Marion Charlton, the Chief Operating Officer of Queensland Airports Limited. Now, years after I finished at Bond, Marion continues to be my greatest supporter and I am forever grateful to have been connected with her through the Vice Chancellor’s Elite Scholarship.

  • 2018 Vice Chancellor's Elite scholar

The Vice Chancellor's Elite scholarship was instrumental in my career development. Directly, it helped by putting me in touch with both my incredible mentor and an expansive network of alumni and professionals outside of the Bond community, who I was able to meet with and learn from. There's a strong community of alumni, which has led to opportunities arising for me; Alumni are always more than eager to help! More indirectly, access to that network and the support network inside Bond for the scholars was really helpful as a sounding board for ideas, advice, and personal development; and was truly crucial to many of the formative decisions I've made in my career.

  • 2009 Vice Chancellor’s Elite scholar

My Vice Chancellor’s Elite scholarship experience was life changing. It brings together like-minded people who strive for excellence, not only in academia, but in every area of their lives. I was greatly inspired by being part of the Vice Chancellor’s Elite scholar community. To this day, I continue to meet Bondies in my travels.

Meagan Ryan - Senior Legal Counsel (Corporate and Intellectual Property), Bega Cheese Limited
  • 1994 Vice Chancellor's Elite scholar

When I was applying for the Vice Chancellor's Elite scholarship, I had never had to do an interview process like that one before, admittedly I was 17, but the nervousness highlighted to me just how much I wanted it. Being a graduate of Bond gave me a personal confidence that I could go out into the real world and make an impact. The diversity of students, the facilities, and the location help set Bond apart from any other university.  I'll always remember that the size of the student population made it a tight community, and that was a nice feeling.

Daniel Kowalski - Head of Olympian Services at the Australian Olympic Committee
  • 2017 Vice Chancellor's Elite Scholar

The Vice Chancellor Scholarship was a truly life-changing experience for myself. Through the Scholarship, I was introduced to a supportive mentor, a broad network of alumni and leading professionals in a range of fields, who I was able to connect with and learn from. As a Vice Chancellor Scholar, you are constantly provided with opportunities to grow and develop your skill sets, both professionally and personally, which ultimately sets you up for your future career.
