Criminal Law and Procedure

Learning from Assistant Professor Dr Matthew Raj, Faculty of Law academic and Founder and Director of the Bond Criminal Law Clinic, this Learn for Credit course will immerse you in the study of criminal law.

Gain practical insight into the exciting world of criminal law, including going to court, criminal offences, criminal defences, and the powers relied upon by police.

Students will participate in practical group work preparing advice, and refining their writing skills and oral presentation skills by preparing submissions in a moot court. 

You can choose to participate in just the in-person workshops, or complete the full course through the workshop, online modules and additional readings and assessment.

For-credit subject

This experience can provide credit towards a university subject. Contact us to find out how students can complete five experiences and apply for credit for one 10cp subject into a Bond University undergraduate degree and obtain two points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

  • This course is delivered via five online modules: 

    • Introduction to Criminal Law
    • Police Powers
    • Going to Court
    • Criminal Offences
    • Defences

    Students will also complete a two-day practical workshop where they will brief a partner of a criminal firm by preparing written submissions on chosen topics (taken from the learnings of the online modules), and preparing submissions on sentence in a moot court. 

    You can choose to participate in just the in-person workshops, or complete the full course through the workshop, online modules and additional readings and assessment.

    Designed for: High school students in Years 11 and 12 

    Delivery: On campus/online

    Learning time: A total of 24 hours of learning, consisting of: 

    • 10 hours of online modules on the Bond Learner platform
    • Two 5-hour face-to-face workshops on campus (total of 12 hours)
    • 4 hours of additional readings and assessment 

    Cost: $99

Meet your educator

Dr Matthew Raj

Matthew is an Assistant Professor in Bond University's Faculty of Law, where he currently lectures criminal law and procedure. He is also the Founder and Director of the Bond Criminal Law Clinic.

He is called to the Bar of England & Wales (The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple). In 2017, he completed pupillage at 5 King's Bench Walk where, among other things, he assisted Queen's Counsel in criminal trials at the Old Bailey, appeared in the Crown Court and the Magistrates Court, and assisted on appeals.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Laws with Criminology from Kingston University, London, and completed the Bar Professional Training Course at City Law School. He was awarded his PhD from Bond University for which he received a Pro-Vice Chancellor Scholarship. Matthew has completed the Bond University Mediation Course and became registered as a Nationally Accredited Mediator in Australia. He has co-authored several academic publications and his most recent research is concerned with citizen's arrests, as well as wage theft in Australia.
