General Information
The subject focuses on describing how the ageing process impacts a variety of body systems, function and overall health and well-being as well as the older person’s physical activity and nutrition practices. Students will also gain insight into a range of common age-related conditions and the potential acute and chronic benefits and risks of exercise; as well as common barriers and facilitators for exercise and nutrition for facilitating healthy ageing.

Attendance and learning activities: Assessment in the Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology is continuous, involving formative assessments where students gain experience and feedback on key assessed tasks, alongside summative assessments which contribute to your final academic success. Forums, tutorials and laboratories are designed to build sequentially on previous material with an emphasis on the practical application of the theory in laboratory and practicum experiences. Attendance at all forums, tutorials and laboratories is expected. If you are unable to attend a scheduled session due to illness or bereavement it is your responsibility to contact your course convener to discuss catch up opportunities. The laboratory activities introduce you to, and teach you, the application of a range of technologies to aid in assessment, prescription and delivery of exercise which is designed to provide you with the skills necessary to quickly adopt the technology available to you in the workplace. You will be required to participate in activities as both a client and an allied health professional. All generative AI activities will be conducted via the University’s preferred platform or as directed by the subject coordinator. -

- Explain the physical, functional, cognitive, and nutritional changes associated with ageing, including the aetiology, pathophysiology, polypharmacy implications, and nutrient requirements of common age-related conditions.
- Evaluate Australian aged care funding pathways to inform service delivery and client access for exercise physiology interventions.
- Integrate evidence-based behaviour change and self-management strategies into person-centred care plans to address barriers to exercise and nutrition.
- Perform evidence-based assessment and screening processes, including frailty, falls risk, and malnutrition screening, to evaluate older adults across diverse care settings.
- Design individual and group exercise prescriptions for older adults with single or multiple age-related conditions, using evidence-based principles to optimise safety, effectiveness, and functional outcomes.

High Distinction 85-100 Outstanding or exemplary performance in the following areas: interpretative ability; intellectual initiative in response to questions; mastery of the skills required by the subject, general levels of knowledge and analytic ability or clear thinking. Distinction 75-84 Usually awarded to students whose performance goes well beyond the minimum requirements set for tasks required in assessment, and who perform well in most of the above areas. Credit 65-74 Usually awarded to students whose performance is considered to go beyond the minimum requirements for work set for assessment. Assessable work is typically characterised by a strong performance in some of the capacities listed above. Pass 50-64 Usually awarded to students whose performance meets the requirements set for work provided for assessment. Study Information
Policy on late submission and extensions
A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.

Investigate the public health guidelines for older adults, identifying the epidemiological evidence for physical activity and nutrition practice and common medications that are used by this population.

Healthy ageing frameworks
Explore how healthy ageing practices may differ for a range of subcommunities including masters athletes to residential aged care. Identify current funding models for maintaining physical activity in the older communities.

Musculoskeletal conditions I
Integrate knowledge of anatomy and tissue properties while learning about osteoporosis and the increased risk of fracture associated with falls. Design creative exercise interventions to train and progress balance.

Musculoskeletal conditions II
Gain a deeper understanding of the physiology of osteoarthritis, exercise and nutritional recommendations to maintain mobility, including an understanding of applying biomechanics to modify movements to reduce pain.

Learn the difference between atrophy and sarcopenia and frailty, and how to assess and prescribe for individuals with sarcopenia and the adaptations expected.

Take part in a yarning circle with local Elders to gain insight into different perspectives on Ageing from other cultures.

Cardiovascular conditions I
Gain deeper understanding of the physiology of coronary heart disease and exercise based cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Cardiovascular and neurological conditions
Learn the impact that stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease have on an individual's independence and quality of life, and explore the exercise and nutrition recommendations for these patient populations.

Learn about the physiology and impact of dementia, the different patient behaviours that present, and the challenges of maintaining physical activity within Residential Aged Care.

Develop insight into the physiology and physical impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the exercise and nutrition recommendations for this patient group.

Learn about the benefits of correct exercise prescription when navigating cancer, acknowledging that the diagnosis and the patient's history will impact the selected prescription.
