About this program

The Bachelor of Journalism is a practical, industry-focused degree that immerses you in the full spectrum of contemporary storytelling, including investigative reporting, podcasting and video journalism, as well as mobile, digital, and multiplatform media production. Taught by experienced journalists and media professionals, the program blends foundational journalism skills and values (including research rigour, journalistic ethics, critical information literacy and narrative capabilities) with evolving digital practices to prepare you for careers across established and emerging newsrooms, digital and social platforms, and the growing landscape of creative and communication roles.

Throughout your degree, you will engage in a wide range of reporting experiences using industry-standard facilities, gain real-world publishing opportunities and collaborate directly with media partners. You will also have a choice of complementary majors, so you can tailor your studies to define your professional identity and build specialised expertise. You will graduate with a substantial portfolio that demonstrates your capabilities across multiple formats and platforms, positioning you for a broad and evolving range of media and communication careers.     From your very first journalism class, you will start building a portfolio of traditional and digital media work. By the time you graduate, you will have a range of real-life experiences, projects, and show reels, and a thorough understanding of the latest trends in mobile and digital journalism to present to future employers.

  • Gain access to industry

    You’ll have the opportunity to intern with major media organisations including Channel 7, Channel 10, ABC, The Guardian, the Australian Good Food Guide, Smart Erickson, and more, thanks to our long-standing industry partnerships.

    Even on campus, you will be creating blogs, podcasts, media stories and websites for publication. Our journalism students have covered state and Federal elections, interviewed politicians and high-profile business leaders, and hosted visiting media productions and personalities.

  • Standout facilities

    Home to one of the largest film and television production facilities in south-east Queensland, Bond has a fully equipped three-camera digital television studio, more than 40 editing stations and audio mixing suites, and the latest camera equipment. One of the key benefits of Bond’s small classes is that every student has access to these facilities. You can even borrow industry-standard lighting, camera, and sound equipment from the Equipment Loan Store to use on your film projects.

  • Industry professionals

    Our journalism subjects are taught by people who don’t just work in the industry but are leaders in their field. In our small group, discussion-based classes, you will be mentored by former ABC executive and journalist Dr Julie Browning and internationally acclaimed smartphone photographer and filmmaker Rob Layton.

  • Global experience

    Take the opportunity to undertake internships in Australia and overseas, or to work and study abroad for a semester, thanks to our extensive International Student Exchange program, which includes some of the leading universities in the USA, UK, Europe, and Asia. Please note this experience may be impacted by COVID.

    Extracurricular programs such as the Bond Transformer and Beyond Bond let you work on real-life passion projects and volunteer programs as part of your studies.
