LAWS75-320: Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct

Description

Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct is a compulsory subject in the Juris Doctor program offered by the Faculty of Law. This subject examines the traditions and regulation of the legal profession; the functions, duties and privileges of barristers and solicitors; and the rules of conduct and etiquette of the profession. Students will also consider the concept of a profession and the scope of professional responsibilities. The subject includes practical application of the rules and underlying principles in modern legal practice. Note this is a half unit subject.

Learning outcomes

1. Understand what is required to be a professional in the discipline of law. 2. Understand the legal, statutory and ethical standards that apply to the legal profession, particularly in Queensland, together with an ability to analyse these critically. 3. Apply legal and ethical standards by identifying circumstances of legal and ethical risk, understanding the ethical framework in which they arise, and developing appropriate strategies to avoid these risks.
