Professional biography
Research interests
My research interests include the law relating to central banking, the legal aspects of distributed ledger technologies (including cryptocurrencies), civil remedies, international commercial arbitration, and legal education, including the pedagogical benefits of mooting. My PhD thesis is on the regulatory framework of the Reserve Bank of Australia's mandate for financial stability.
I am currently an Associate Professor and Associate Dean (Student Affairs and Service Quality) at Bond University.
I joined Bond University in May 2006, after serving as Senior Legal Counsel for the South African Reserve Bank for 11 years, heading the Corporate, Commercial and Employment Law section. I previously worked as a commercial specialist at SASOL (a large petro-chemical company in South Africa) for approximately 5 years, focusing on the negotiating and drafting of various commercial contracts. I started my working life as a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Pretoria, before being appointed as editor and translator at Sanlam (a large South African insurance company) and the South African Reserve Bank, before switching to law and commercial work.
At Bond University, I have taught private law subjects (mostly Civil Remedies, Contracts and Torts), as well as the elective subjects Banking and Finance Law and International Contracts. I have served as Director of Mooting in the Faculty of Law from 2013 to 2020, and have coached many award-winning moot teams. I have coached team for the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition (and Vis East) since 2009 and have acted as judge for written submissions and oral arguments.
