Doblo on the double

Bond University Rugby star Eva Doblo really isn’t one for sitting still.

After a terrific season for the Bull Sharks Premier Women which saw them fall agonisingly short of an extraordinary fifth straight Queensland Premier League premiership, Doblo could probably have been excused for putting her feet up for a spell.

Not a chance.

First the feisty outside back’s electrifying speed and on-field competitiveness earned her selection for the Queensland Reds at the recent Santos Festival of Rugby held in Roma.

And there was no way Doblo was going to miss a fifth straight year representing her country at her first sporting love, Oztag.

Doblo - a Bond University Bachelor of Sports Management student - skippered Australia’s U21 side to ITF Tag World Cup glory last weekend in Coffs Harbour, with her side far too good for Great Britain in the final, winning 12-0.

“It was such an honour to captain the team,” she says.

“And I also received my five-year national representative recognition, so it was a pretty special few days for me personally.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

It was a family affair with Doblo playing alongside her sister, Zara, in the U21s.

Her younger brother, James, lined up for Australia in the U16s competition.

Doblo says Oztag is a perfect supplement to her rugby.

“It’s incredibly fast and you have to be fit and agile,” she says.

“It’s really helped my attacking play in rugby and the speed of the game naturally lends itself to sharpening up your ball skills too.”
