Supporting student-athletes

If you have big goals of taking the sporting world by storm, your ambitions are safe with us – we will do our best to help you make them a reality through a range of services designed especially for student-athletes.

We have seen hundreds of elite athletes across a number of sports choose to start their studies here at Bond, and many of these students have gone onto become leaders both on and off the field (or the court…or the pool…).

What constitutes a student-athlete?

Any athlete currently competing at a state, national or international level in their chosen sport qualifies for the Bond Elite Sport Program. Each application is assessed and placed into one of two tiers – Tier 1, for national and international athletes in open age groups, and Tier 2, for state and national athletes in specific age groups.

Depending on your tier, you’ll receive some or all of the support options listed above throughout your degree, and as you develop your skills and profile as an elite-level athlete, whatever your chosen sport.

Bondies have competed at every Olympics and Commonwealth Games since 1992.

How we support student-athletes

The transition to university life can be tricky, and for student-athletes – who may spend hours per day training, exercising and maintaining their high-level sporting activities – there can be even more pressure.

The Bond Elite Sport Program (BESP) is a program offered in conjunction with the Elite Athlete University Network (EAUN) Program, providing flexible study loads and adjusted academic requirements for student-athletes. It also offers participating students a range of additional opportunities and concessions, including priority timetabling, access to our resident tutoring program for academic support, Beyond Bond points and access to the Elite Athlete Fund (Tier 1 only).

Our student-athletes span across a number of sports including rugby, netball, AFL, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, equestrian, cricket, kayaking… the list goes on. Since the University welcomed its first cohort in 1989, we’ve seen elite athletes at all levels study at and graduate from Bond, and our list of notable alumni includes household names, Commonwealth Games athletes and even Olympians – even some gold medal winners!

Another way that we highlight, celebrate and support athletic prowess is through our sporting scholarships. We offer a select number of full-fee scholarships to high-achieving students each year, across both undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines.
