Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Program overview

Biomedical science is the interface between science and medicine. It is the science of how the body works, what happens when it goes wrong – and why – and is the critical backbone of scientific developments and advances in medicine and healthcare.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science is a broad-based degree designed to offer a pathway to medicine, allied health and scientific research degrees.

The program will develop your understanding of the molecular, cellular, anatomical, and physiological processes that occur in the human body.

You will be working in the laboratories right from your first week, analysing case studies and applying problem-solving techniques in a variety of clinical, research and allied healthcare settings. You will also develop important health communication skills.

Studying in small classes, you will have unrivalled access to the latest research equipment, learning under the supervision of our dedicated laboratory and research staff.

Bond’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science is the fastest pathway to a career in medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, healthcare innovations and medical research.  With Bond’s three-semester-per-year accelerated timetable, you can complete the Bachelor of Biomedical Science in just two years and progress seamlessly into our postgraduate health sciences programs. This is also the only pathway into the Medical Program for international students.

About this program

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science is a 2-year accelerated degree that provides you with the ideal undergraduate foundation for a career in the health sciences. The program develops your knowledge in the molecular, cellular, anatomical, and physiological processes of the human body and prepares you for graduate-entry programs such as medicine and the allied health professions. The program will develop your knowledge and laboratory skills across a range of disciplines including anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, pharmacology, chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and microbiology. Extensive laboratory training from the first semester, as well as case studies and problem-solving techniques are applied within a variety of clinical, research, and allied health care settings. The program focuses on real-world learning, where you will gain exceptional, high-quality practical experience in our health science laboratories. You will be able to develop and master technical-scientific and research skills using some of the latest research equipment, from the very first semester. Due to Bond University’s small class sizes, you will be able to enjoy extensive use of this equipment and will be able to use the facilities outside of scheduled class times to further develop and refine your practical skills. The laboratories have dedicated laboratory staff to provide support and optimise your learning experience. An innovative feature of the program is the application of problem-based learning in the curriculum, a popular feature in medical programs which creates an engaging student learning experience to increase analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills.

What you'll be studying

  • Year 1

You will be immersed in the science of the body and will begin to complete the degree’s seven foundation subjects including cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. You’ll also complete three core University subjects providing you with essential skills in critical thinking, communication, and leadership.

Program features

  • A strong foundation

With Bond’s three-semester-per-year timetable, students can complete the Bachelor of Biomedical Science in just two years and progress seamlessly into our postgraduate health sciences programs for another two years, making this the fastest pathway to a career in medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, healthcare innovations and medical research.

  • A degree unique to you

You can choose to major in either laboratory/research or pre-health professional and tailor your degree to your career aspirations. Students completing the laboratory/ research major will have the opportunity to undertake a two-semester research project with Bond’s biomedical science researchers. The pre-health/professional major provides a choice of two discipline elective subjects, from the fields of nutrition, exercise & sports science, psychology, healthcare innovation and medical research.

  • Master critical skills

Through extensive, hands-on laboratory training - using some of the latest research equipment including virtual reality and augmented reality technologies - you will develop and master fundamental technical scientific and research skills.

  • A pathway into Medicine

If you’re interested in pursuing a medical career, high achieving graduates of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science program may be eligible to enter Year 2 of Bond’s Medical Program (in January) via the lateral entry pathway.

Hear from our Bondies

  • "I chose to do the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond because I was confident it would give me a strong foundation to go into medicine later. I could complete the program in two years and then have the opportunity to apply for entry into the second year of Bond’s Medical Program; or I could apply to study medicine somewhere else afterwards."

Caio Christiansen - Biomedical science alumnus
  • "I aspire to study medicine to become a doctor and then get into research after that, which is why I am studying the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond. The accelerated nature of the program attracted me, as I could then finish earlier and start prepping for medicine. There is also an excellent research exposure at Bond which will lay a good foundation for my future academic ambition."

Hita Nayak - Biomedical science alumna
  • "I chose the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond because it is the highest-ranking biomedical science program in Australia. The staff were always happy to chat about their research and clinical experiences, opening my eyes to the range of career opportunities. My biomedical science degree has really prepared me and has given me a solid scientific grounding and has expanded my awareness of issues in public health areas such as evidence-based care and equal access to healthcare."
