Dr Clinton Schultz

Professional biography

Dr Clinton Schultz is a Gamilaraay man who’s family originally come from the Tamworth/Manilla area in northern NSW. He was working overseas as a professional chef when he devised a youth program to help kids at home. Recognising the need to gain university qualifications in order to develop the project, he returned to Australia and completed a Bachelor of Psychological Science with Honours; becoming one of less than 20 male Aboriginal registered psychologists in Australia.

In 2010, Clinton founded Marumali Consultations to fill the gap in access to culturally appropriate mental health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in south-east Queensland. He has since served as Vice Chair of the Australian Indigenous Psychologists Association (AIPA) and lead facilitator of the Association’s cultural competence training for mental health practitioners. He currently sits on the board of the Indigenous Allied Health Association (IAHA) as well as several state and national advisory groups.

In 2018, Clinton was honoured as Griffith University’s most outstanding First Nations Alumnus and, in 2019, was named Health Professional of the Year by IAHA. He was recently awarded his PhD focussing on holistic well-being for members of the Indigenous health workforce and continues to pursue research interests in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional well-being, men’s well-being, institutional discrimination, and cultural and interdisciplinary education in tertiary settings.

Drawing on his previous experience in the food and beverage industry, Clinton has also established social businesses designed to promote Indigenous culture, heritage and community, while also raising awareness of the problems of alcohol use in Australian society. Sobah beverages is Australia’s only non-alcoholic craft beer company and Sobah products are now sold in cafes, restaurants, bars and bottle shops Australia-wide. Sobah is also a platform for further social initiatives.
