HDR candidates FAQs

These FAQs provide up-to-date advice for Bond University HDR students regarding our precautionary response to the current outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) and are therefore subject to change. These FAQs will be updated as new information becomes available.


Yes - currently we will be offering enrolments for 2021. In regard to international students the issue of the availability of visa for entry into Australia may delay commencement of studies.

If you are a commencing international graduate research student with an approved visa:

  • Bond will give you the option to enrol offshore and commence your studies from home as long as your supervisor agrees, and you are able to comply with our guidelines for off campus study.
  • You can choose to defer your offer for a semester later in the year

Higher Degree Scholarships

If you are an international student and are unable to commence your program as planned due to the Government's travel restrictions you can request to defer your commencement (and applicable scholarships) to a later semester intake date. If you  have access to adequate resources and facilities at your location to support the commencement of your research program whilst offshore, you may instead seek approval to commence your program off campus.

International candidates who are awarded a Bond University Higher Degree Scholarship will receive the tuition fee waiver as soon as they commence  their program.  However, candidates cannot be paid a stipend into an overseas bank account. Therefore, your stipend will start upon your arrival in Australia. The stipend end date will be deferred to reflect the awarded duration.

The University is open but when on campus you are required to follow social distancing protocols in regard to your colleagues, supervisors and anyone on the campus.

Specific provision for HDR students will be made to allow room for physical distancing. Where current HDR facilities are unable to provide this then students will be required to move to alternative spaces provided. Where there is preference for remaining in the existing space priority will be given to students who have essential software on their allocated PCs.

The Main Library, Law Library, MLC, Business Commons and HSM and FSD Atriums will be open to all students, however a valid Student ID Card is required for access. Please monitor Opening Hours via the Library website and Library news 

Please comply with mask wearing and sanitisation requirements in libraries and study areas on campus, as these are indoor educational space under Queensland Health Directions.

Your faculty will assist you with these issues where possible including ways to have physical distancing in place or changing your research methods. If it is not possible to get around these issues you could consider applying for leave of absence for a period.

We understand this is a very difficult time and you may be feeling worried about your own health, or the health of your loved ones. We also understand this constantly changing situation may be stressful. The university has counselling and medical services on campus and you should contact these services for assistance.

If you are enrolled in a faculty with coursework requirements and are prevented from coming to campus for your classes, your ADR will work with you and your supervisors to adjust your study plan. This could involve undertaking subjects at a later date.

Yes, though it may be online. In some circumstances confirmations may be postponed if matters associated with COVID-19 have impacted on your capacity to finalize your confirmation.

If you are a continuing graduate research student, you may:

  • activate your 20 days of annual leave, or
  • study from home, keep in contact with your supervisors and access the Bond online research and library resources.
  • If you have expended your annual leave and/or cannot work from home, we will offer appropriate solutions on a case-by-case basis (e.g. leave of absence, university-activated extensions to work submission dates).

The University will consider an extension of candidature with 100% fee waiver for an eligible student if a student is:

  • otherwise making satisfactory progress; and
  • the grounds for the extension relate to the student’s course of study being materially adversely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

Eligibility is limited to students that were either enrolled

  • as at 1 March 2020; or
  • prior to 1 March 2020 and on a suspension or leave of absence as at 1 March 2020.

An extension of candidature is up to six months. To apply for an extension of candidature with 100% fee waiver students must submit their request using the Extension of Candidature form in WorkflowGen. Supporting evidence including supervisor reports and evidence of the impact of COVID-19 to demonstrate any material adverse impact should be attached to the form. Currently as examination is primarily involving paper documentation this should not impact on the progress of examination from the university perspective though the broader impact of COVID-19 may impact on the availability of examiners and time to complete examinations.

The University is acutely aware of the importance of Graduation Day. They are liminal moments that represent the culmination of years of hard work and application.

The University will be hosting graduation ceremonies in 2021. However, any further changes to COVID-19 related health and travel restrictions may necessitate a further changes to the venue or programme. Please refer to the Bond University Graduations webpage for current information about the 2021 graduation ceremonies.

If an international PhD student requires an LOA due to COVID-19 restrictions if the LOA is approved by the Executive Dean or delegate and the university reports the student as on LOA due to ‘compassionate and compelling circumstances’ the student may be able to remain onshore for the duration of their LOA. International students should first seek advice from the International Students Team Coordinator in the Student Business Centre about visa conditions and implications before commencing a leave of absence during candidature.
