Research and Statistics in Psychology

Across all science fields, including psychology, research and effective use of statistics is what helps us to make sense of the world. Psychology in particular allows us to understand why we act the way we do as individuals and operative collectively as a society. 

Scientists, including psychologists, need to be trained in a range of research methods and data analytics techniques to quantify the phenomena they study. This course will introduce learners to the scientific methods of research, including an overview of research design and techniques for analysing data, and provide practical experience in collecting and analysing data. 

This course is delivered via six interactive online modules: 

  • Ethics in Research
  • Research Design
  • Getting Started with Research
  • Processing Data
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Drawing Conclusions and Communicating Scientifically 

Students will also complete a two-day practical workshop where they will run their own research project.

Designed for: High school students in Years 11 and 12 

Delivery: On campus/online

Learning time: A total of 24 hours of learning, consisting of: 

  • 6 hours of online modules on the Bond Learner platform
  • 12 hours face-to-face on campus (Gold Coast)
  • 3 hours of additional readings and assessment

Assistant Professor Gaelle Brotto

Dr Gaelle Brotto, Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Faculty of Society & Design, specialises in statistics, research methods, and criminology. She is dedicated to transforming student learning through innovative, interactive, and engaging teaching. 

Dr Brotto adopts a personalised, caring and enthusiastic approach, incorporates strategies to reduce student apprehension, especially about statistics, and provides authentic, real-world assessment activities. Her commitment and efforts have been recognised through the achievement of two teaching awards. She is the author of a book chapter and is in the process of writing journal articles in the areas of interpersonal violence, victim-offender overlap, and outlaw motorcycle gangs, and is contributing to the teaching and learning scholarship here at Bond University.
