Direct entry into the Bond Medical Program is currently only open to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, holders of an Australian Humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens (not New Zealand permanent residents).

Pathways available to international students to join the Medical Program include successful completion of the Bond Bachelor of Biomedical Science (in the pre-health professional major), Master of Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Physiotherapy, Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice, or Master of Healthcare Innovations (Bachelor of Biomedical Science as a pre-requisite). Upon completion of one of these degrees, and meeting the minimum required GPA and pre-requisites, students will be eligible to be considered for selection to enter Year 2 of the Bond Medical Program.

International/overseas students at the time of enrolment, may not be automatically entitled to registration, internship and access to a provider number in Australia.

In today’s complex healthcare environment, Bond’s Medical Program will equip you with the fundamental knowledge, skills and attributes required to practice medicine safely and effectively. You’ll graduate with the clinical, interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills required to deliver high-quality healthcare outcomes as well as an engrained commitment to care for yourself, your colleagues, and all community groups.  

The Medical Program comprises two sequential degrees. You’ll first be required to complete the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) where you will be immersed in small group learning, simulation activities, community and clinical placements, and a cultural immersion experience.  

You’ll then complete the Doctor of Medicine (MD) to be eligible to practice medicine. You’ll engage in evidence-based medicine and integrated placements within clinical sites and will gain extended exposure to areas such as child health, medicine, mental health, surgery, and women's health during your placement.  

Graduate with the advantage of entering the workforce as a doctor in 4 years, 8 months.

About this program

The Bachelor of Medical Studies is the undergraduate component of Bond University’s medical program. It consists of eight semesters at the Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7. It is the prerequisite degree for entry into the Bond MD program, which is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attributes required to safely practice medicine in today’s complex healthcare environment. The Bond Bachelor of Medical Studies is distinguished by its strong educational focus on problem and case-based learning, evidence-based medicine and integrated clinical practice.

Learning and teaching occurs mainly in small group sessions comprising interactive cases through problem-based learning, practical classes, clinical skills laboratories, and simulation-based education activities in the early years. Student learning is supported by a range of contemporary e-learning platforms. This combination of contemporary medical education methodologies ensures that students are well supported throughout their education and that their learning relates directly to patient care.

In the first two years (five semesters) of the program, students undertake weekly small group sessions focusing on developing essential knowledge and skills with a scenario-based learning environment at Bond’s Varsity campus at Robina on the Gold Coast. Students participate in community-based volunteering activities and various community placements and engage in a unique cultural immersion workshop, which is part of the innovative First Nation’s Program. In year three, students work through a variety of authentic patient cases facilitated by experienced clinicians through the Bond Virtual Healthcare. Students also spend time completing contemporary simulation-based sessions at the Bond University Clinical Education and Research Centre located in Robina Hospital, enabling them to transition into the clinical hospital setting.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Medical Studies, students can exit (if required) or transition into the MD program, which is at AQF extended Level 9 Masters level. Graduates from the Bond MD program meet the requirements for provisional medical registration so they can undertake a period of accredited intern training to become eligible for full registration.

Bond University’s Doctor of Medicine Program (MD) is the post graduate component of the medical program, which is only open to students who are enrolled in the Bond medical program and who have successfully completed Bond’s Bachelor of Medical Studies. The MD program consists of the final six semesters of the medical program and is accredited at the Australian Qualifications Framework level 9 Extended Masters Degree qualification over six semesters. The MD program is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes that a doctor requires to safely practise medicine in today’s complex health care environment. The Bond MD program is distinguished by its strong educational focus on case based learning, evidence based medicine and integrated clinical practice. Student learning is supported by a range of contemporary e-learning platforms and a combination of contemporary medical education methodologies that ensure students are well supported throughout their education and research, and their learning relates directly to contemporary patient care. In the fourth year of the medical program, students undertake core clinical rotations in a range of speciality areas.  They also identify, and may, commence a research or professional project. In the final year of the medical program, students undertake further rotations in speciality areas that complement those undertaken in fourth year and complete a selective and elective placement. During this time, students complete a research or professional project, or a clinical capstone experience and present their findings at the end of year student conference. Graduates from the Bond MD program are eligible for provisional medical registration so they can undertake a period of accredited intern training to become eligible for general registration.

What you'll be studying

  • BMedSt: Years 1-3 The preclinical years (Phase 1)

    You will learn mainly in small group sessions which will comprise of interactive cases, clinical skills, and laboratory sessions.

    As part of the integrated curriculum, students will engage in community and hospital-based placements as well as a cultural immersion experience.

    In your third year, you will complete simulation activities to prepare for the transition from campus-based learning to full immersion in the workplace in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.

  • Year 1 (2 semesters)

    Uncover the molecular and cellular foundations of life followed by guided learning through the body systems.

    You will learn the skills involved in effective interpersonal communication, group work and collaborative learning.

    Year 1 also includes an Indigenous focus, with a cultural immersion as part of Bond University’s innovative First Nations Health curriculum.

  • Year 2 (3 semesters)

    You will focus on the second cycle through the body systems and expand your knowledge of psychosocial frameworks, exploring varied responses of individuals, groups, populations, and cultures to disease.

    You will continue to gain knowledge and skills in communication and physical examination. Placements in healthcare settings will provide the context for the understanding of healthcare systems.

  • Year 3 (3 semesters)

    The format of learning changes to clinician-led, case-based learning as part of Bond’s virtual healthcare program. You will learn within an accredited Advanced Simulation Facility that provides an authentic clinical experience.

    You will complete learning blocks which will mirror your clinical placement in the final two years. These will include clinical sciences of pathology and pharmacology, learning the principles of medical imaging along with procedural and clinical skills.

  • Year 3 - Research activity

    Bond’s Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare (IEBH) is the leading research centre at Bond University. In Year 3, you will have the opportunity to learn from academics of international standing and gain first-class skills in assessing evidence in medical practice. In addition, you will complete research modules and written assessments that will provide you with the foundation skills needed to complete your project requirements for the MD.

  • MD: Years 4 - 5 The Clinical Years (Phase 2)

    During the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Extended Masters level program, you will spend two years rotating through clinical placements in hospital and community healthcare settings. You will commence your MD research or professional project, or a capstone experience, and prepare a portfolio of your work. This experience is enhanced by face-to-face teaching.

    Please be aware that due to placement opportunities, the length of semesters may vary compared to the standard Bond University academic calendar.

  • Year 4 (3 semesters)

    Year 4 includes seven-week rotations in any order through the following:

    • Child health
    • Medicine
    • Mental health
    • Surgery
    • Women’s health
    • Community-based
  • Year 5 (3 semesters)

    Year 5 includes seven-week rotations, in any order, through the following:

    • Emergency medicine 
    • General Practice
    • Critical care / Anaesthetics / Orthopaedics
    • Sub-specialist rotation (student choice)
    • Elective 

    The final four weeks of the MD is a preparation for internship.

    Written, clinical and work-based assessments are conducted throughout years 4 and 5. The MD project will culminate in the submission of a final report and presentation at the end-of-year conference.

All students must complete both the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) and the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Bond University to be eligible for registration as a medical practitioner in any state or territory in Australia or New Zealand. Margaret Douglas Medical Scholarship

Bond University is committed to providing opportunities in tertiary education for First Nations Australians, including an Indigenous pathway into its Medical Program*, which comprises a Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine. 

In 2024, Bond University will award a 50% scholarship for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student for the Bachelor of Medical Studies. If eligible, the Doctor of Medicine will be covered by ABSTUDY. 

Please note, this is the only scholarship offered for entry into Bond's Medical Program.
