GPs care for patients of all ages across all disease categories, across their lifetime. They will provide advice and education on health care and can refer patients to see other specialists. General practice is a medical speciality (in some countries called family medicine).

Medical specialists

Medical specialists are responsible for diagnosing patients and performing medical procedures according to their areas of expertise. They are committed to maintaining professional standards through continuing education and peer review. Medical specialists also play a key role in health prevention and advocacy of health issues in the community. Areas of expertise includes paediatrics, cardiology, general surgery, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, dermatology and respiratory to name a few.
