Master of Building Information Modelling and Integrated Project Delivery

Program overview

Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery represent the future of the construction industry.

Developed in response to the challenge of lost productivity, budget blow-outs, time over-runs and waste that plagued major construction projects, IPD is a way of managing projects so that every member of the building team – owner, architect, contractors, engineers, fabricators, and subcontractors – work collaboratively throughout the construction process.

The sharing of information between these team members is made easier by the growing use of BIM – a process of creating and managing information on a construction project whereby every aspect of the build asset has a digital description that becomes part of the ‘model’.

Three of Australia’s state governments have committed to spending $215 billion on infrastructure within a BIM framework before the end of the decade. Private sector organisations are also now specifying that their medium and large construction projects should be delivered using BIM, Lean Construction and IPD.

Bond’s Master of Building Information Modelling and Integrated Project Delivery is a cutting-edge program which has been designed in close collaboration with industry to prepare graduates for leadership roles in consultancies, client organisations and contracting organisations.

The program components align with the frameworks and standards of the industry’s leading professional bodies in Australia, the UK and the USA.

Studying a full-time study load, the Master’s qualification can be completed in just one year with Bond’s accelerated trimester schedule.

A construction degree for the digital age | Master of BIM & IPD

About this program

This innovative program has been designed in strong collaboration with industry to assist construction and other built environment professionals to upskill in order to comply with the stringent practice requirements being demanded by government and knowledgeable private sector clients regarding the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Lean Construction Practice (Lean) and Integrated Project delivery (IPD) in optimised construction project delivery.

The Master of Building Information Modelling and Integrated Project Delivery program prepares students for advanced involvement as relevant BIM/Lean/IPD Managers in their work environment, for the benefit of projects and their stakeholders.

The program is delivered in intensive mode and has the objective of preparing industry professionals to serve as BIM/Lean/IPD managers. While the program does cover various BIM-related technologies, it does not prepare students to be specialist technicians in the niche areas of the technologies covered by the curriculum. The program includes a capstone subject (40 credit points) in which students work on a realistic BIM/Lean/IPD project that requires application analysis and synthesis of complex ‘project’ data. Limited placement opportunities may be available based on meeting required performance criteria.

The program components align with the BIM Framework of buildingSMART Australasia, the open standards of buildingSMART International, the principles espoused by the Lean Construction Institutes of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and internationally recognised principles of IPD.

What you'll be studying

  • Study Outline

The Master of BIM and IPD comprises 120 credit points made up of eight, 5 credit point subjects; four 10 credit point subjects; and one 40 credit point capstone project.

Program features

  • Practial and interactive

Bond’s teaching combines essential theory with integrated practice in a studio-like learning environment where you are working on challenging, real-world practical tasks.

  • By industry for industry

The program has been designed in close consultation with the leading industry authorities and practitioners to meet the increased demand for professionals with qualifications in BIM, Lean construction and IPD.

  • Taught by experts

Our BIM and IPD subjects are taught by people who don’t just work in the industry but are leaders in their field. In our small group, discussion-based classes, you will be mentored by people like Toby Maple who is implementing BIM at Atlassian’s new Australian headquarters and at organisations like Woolworths Limited and Queensland Health; former BIM/Asset Integration lead for BHP, Pieter Rautenbach; and building SMART Australasia chair, David Mitchell.

  • Award-winning facilities

You will be studying in state of the art facilities designed specifically to promote engagement and collaboration in order to maximise your education outcomes.

  • Master of Building Information Modelling and Integrated Project Delivery

Intensive mode delivery meant that I was able to maintain a presence at work and really focus when studying on campus. It felt like a three-day-long brainstorming session with an industry expert! My fellow students were also from industry so it was a fluid, relaxed environment where we could ask questions, have an interactive learning experience, and contribute to each other's knowledge base. The calibre of lecturers is really high, and work for companies that are well known in the industry.

"The buildingSMART Australasia panel has no hesitation in recommending full accreditation of the BIM & IPD programs at Bond. The quality and deep enthusiasm of the staff who teach into the program is very impressive. Bond’s programs provide a well-balanced set of offerings that comprehensively address the issues around the industry adoption of BIM and Open BIM. We were pleased to note the diversity of students and industry experience in the program, whose enthusiasm was very reassuring. We strongly endorse the commitment to face-to-face teaching as the most appropriate way of delivering content, supported by the intensive-mode delivery format viable for industry practitioners. We also applaud the micro-credentialled modules that can be gradually accumulated to gain the program awards."
