Graduate Certificate in Building Information Modelling and Integrated Project Delivery

Program overview

Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) represent the future of the construction industry.

Developed in response to the challenge of lost productivity, budget blow-outs, time over-runs and waste that plagued major construction projects, IPD is a way of managing projects so that every member of the building team work collaboratively throughout the construction process.

The sharing of information between these team members is made easier by the growing use of BIM – a process of creating and managing information on a construction project whereby every aspect of the build asset has a digital description that becomes part of the ‘model’.

The program components align with the BIM framework of buildingSMART Australasia, the open standards of buildingSMART international, the principles espoused by the Lean Construction Institutes of Australia, the UK and the USA, and internationally recognised principles of IPD.  The program has been designed in close collaboration with industry to prepare graduates for leadership roles in consultancies, client organisations and contracting organisations.

The graduate certificate is the first step of an articulated postgraduate pathway. Microcredentials are also available for each of the eight introductory modules, which are presented as professional short courses. Go on to complete an additional four coursework subjects to earn a graduate diploma and a final 40 credit point capstone project for the full master’s qualification.

About this program

This cutting edge program has been designed in strong collaboration with industry to assist construction and other built environment professionals to upskill in order to comply with the stringent practice requirements being demanded by government and knowledgeable private sector clients regarding the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Lean Construction Practice (Lean) and Integrated Project delivery (IPD) in optimised construction project delivery. The course is the equivalent of forty post graduate credit points.

To meet the requirements of industry professionals, the program is delivered by a series of micro-credentialed modules, each comprising a two day learning intensive and a one day learning intensive, and has the objective of preparing industry professionals to be better qualified to work in their professions as BIM, Lean and/or IPD managers, rather than as specialist IT specialist technicians for the niche areas of the technologies covered by the curriculum.

The program components have been designed to align with the BIM Framework of buildingSMART Australasia, the open standards of buildingSMART International, the principles espoused by the Lean Construction Institutes of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and internationally recognised principles of IPD.

This program will provide students with an opportunity to gain and comprehend the knowledge necessary to contribute within their professional areas as BIM/Lean/IPD qualified team members and leaders.
