A collaborative design studio environment

The Abedian School of Architecture provides an exceptional learning experience through a collaborative design studio environment - this includes the unique design of the building itself, as well as innovative workshop and digital fabrication lab facilities.


The building

Designed by globally-renowned architects Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham from CRAB Studios in London, the Abedian School of Architecture building is innovative, ultra-modern and bold in design; yet practical in function. The unique design of the building provides an exceptional learning experience. It acts as a teaching tool where theory comes to life, and inspires innovation and creativity in students. A floating mezzanine, spiral staircases and internal ‘streets’ are just some of the design features. Additional features include ‘scoops’ that provide individual workplaces for students to exhibit and critique their work, as well as dedicated environmental science laboratories. These features excite and stimulate a contemporary education space in which students, the industry and community can learn, gather and exhibit.

 The design of the building ignites creativity and inspiration for students who will be studying and learning in an architectural wonder. The building fosters collaboration at all levels from undergraduates to postgraduates where architectural students and academics can learn, create and exhibit in an open plan studio environment. Students will benefit from exclusive access to collaborative design studios, reading and resource rooms, an atelier as well as impressive exhibition and event space.

The Workshop and Digital Fabrication Lab

The Workshop and Digital Fabrication Lab provides opportunities in design as part of the new generation of architecture. Studio, workshop and digital based learning are core components of Architectural studies with practical hands on projects contributing to a large part of the programs.

The Architecture Fabrication Research Laboratory is comprised of state of the art technical equipment including a laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC router and digital robotics, providing opportunities in design as part of the new generation of architecture. The workshop is a fully equipped traditional tool workshop to bring projects to life. Students will learn about shape and form, textile usage, light and shade influences, structure and strength, design aesthetics and other architectural influences that exist in this creatively driven profession.

The workshop and digital fabrication lab include full woodworking and digital production machines, including: 

  • Trotec laser cutter with an 800x1100 bed size
  • ​Dimension uPrint 3d printer with a 200x200x200 build area and 2 Maker-Bot 3d printers
  • ART CNC Router with a 500x2400x250 bed size
  • ABB 2.8m Robotic Arm on a 4m track
  • High end computing facilities with advanced modelling software (Rhino, Digital Project, REVIT, Adobe Creative Suite, HAL, etc.).

The Abedian School of Architecture Industrial Robot

The internationally acclaimed Abedian School of Architecture is home to a state-of-the-art industrial robotics lab. The cutting-edge industrial robot is not only incorporated as a fabrication and assembly tool - capable of far more complex manoeuvers  than current equipment – but also as a learning tool. There are only 30 of the robot's kind being used in architectural education worldwide.
