Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice

Program overview

The Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice has been designed for overseas trained lawyers who intend to practise law in Australia and are required by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board to study Australian law subjects, to ensure equivalent knowledge to Australian trained law graduates.

Completing the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice will provide you with a pathway to practise as a legal practitioner in Australia while also qualifying for a postgraduate degree.

The degree is an 80-credit point program (total of 8 subjects) completed over two semesters which is tailored to your needs.  Your subjects in the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice will comprise of those subjects necessary to meet with requirements of the Legal Practitioners Admission Board (up to a maximum of 8 subjects), together with postgraduate elective law subjects, of your choice, to ensure you complete 80 credit points in total.

If you intend to practise in Australia, upon completion of the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice, you can apply to study the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) (also known as practical legal training (PLT).  The GDLP program at Bond University prepares you for admission to legal practice.

About this program

The Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice (LLM (ALP)) program is available to students with a law degree from an international jurisdiction. Students who have had their international law degrees assessed by an Australian Legal Practitioners Admissions Board and who have been advised which Priestley 11 areas of knowledge they are required to complete to be eligible to apply for admission as legal practitioners in Australia, may be eligible to apply for this program. It provides students with subjects they require to complement their existing law qualification in essential areas of substantive law and access to a wide choice of law elective subjects. An integrated skills and professionalism program is embedded in the substantive law subjects and focuses on core legal skills essential to the practise of law.

What you'll be studying

  • Semester 1

    The Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice is tailored to enable you to meet the requirements of the Legal Practitioners Admission Board.  In your first semester, you will enrol in the subjects necessary to meet those requirements.

  • Meet LPAB Requirements

    The Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice will provide you with the opportunity to study the law subjects required by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board to enable you to prepare for admission to legal practice in Australia.

  • Postgraduate Law Degree

    Studying the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice provides you with the opportunity to gain an Australian postgraduate law degree whilst meeting the Legal Practitioners Admission Board’s requirements to prepare for admission to legal practice in Australia.

  • Postgraduate Electives

    In addition to studying the law subjects required by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board, you may have the opportunity to study additional postgraduate law elective subjects and enhance your knowledge in an area of interest.

  • Prepare for Admission

    Upon completion of the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice, you can study the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP): your pathway to admission to legal practice.   In addition, you may be eligible for an alumni discount for Bond’s GDLP program.
