The ability for a coach to effectively communicate with their athletes is an essential element of successful coaching. Unfortunately, for many coaches it is a skill that is rarely explored and developed.

Bond University Sport is proud to offer Sports Coaching: Essential Communication Skills, an online microcredential designed for sports coaches who are coaching youth or adult athletes / teams, from participation to performance levels.

The course provides coaches with the opportunity to reflect upon their coach communication practices whilst exploring recent research, best practice examples and real-life scenarios. The course will specifically cover the delivery of instruction, feedback, and effective creation and use of coaching cues.

This course is available to complete online at any time via our high-quality learner platform. The self-paced delivery gives you the flexibility to work around your other commitments.

Meet your course instructor

Matthew Wilkie

Matthew has over 15 years of experience in high-performance coaching and coach development with various national and international sporting teams and organisations, including the Queensland Reds, the International Council of Coaching Excellence, and Rugby Australia.

Most recently, Matthew was the Head of Coach Development for the Irish Rugby Football Union. He supported the continual personal and professional development of all national and provincial professional coaches and led the design and implementation of the community coaching framework.

Now residing on the Gold Coast, Matthew is the Director of Coaching at the Southport School and continues to consult and mentor a number of professional coaches across the globe in sports that include AFL, rugby sevens, hockey, rugby, Gaelic football, netball, and soccer.
