What can you do with your degree?

While broadly speaking, psychologists help individuals overcome issues from making life decisions, symptom management and improving coping skills for persons living with a mental illness.  With the challenges of Covid-19 it's no surprise that mental health services are in demand now more than ever.

There are a range of rewarding psychology career opportunities which can be undertaken in a medical setting within healthcare organisations, consultancies, and private practice.

Clinical psychology

A clinical psychologist is able to assess, diagnose and treat patients with mental illness and behavioural disorders.  These disorders can range from severe to mild.  Through assessments and diagnosis, a clinical psychologist can provide their patients with advice and a wide range of tailored treatment options.  This can be techniques and/or therapies that a patient can do in between appointments to improve and restore their mental health.

Professional accreditation

Graduates of the Master of Psychology (Clinical) will be eligible for registration as a practising psychologist and can apply for:

  • General registration as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Eligibility for the Clinical Psychologist Registrar Pathway
  • Membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS)
  • Membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists

  1. Apply advanced psychological knowledge of psychopathology, aetiology, classification and psychopharmacology to clinical assessment, formulation and intervention.
  2. Apply culturally responsive and culturally safe approaches to clinical assessment, formulation and intervention with diverse and First Nations clients across complex presentations.
  3. Critically evaluate clinical research and evidence to inform case formulation and the selection of interventions.
  4. Interpret and communicate clinical findings in written formats, including formal psychological reports and case formulations, using culturally appropriate language.
  5. Apply professional interpersonal and interview skills to communicate clinical information orally with clients, families and other professionals in a culturally responsive manner.
  6. Apply ethical principles and professional standards to manage complex ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, working within competence boundaries and applying digital technologies ethically and competently.
  7. Engage in interprofessional collaborative practice in clinical settings, consulting and collaborating with other professionals in complex case management.
  8. Complete a substantial research-based project that integrates scientific evidence with clinical practice.
  9. Exercise professional reflexivity to critically appraise and adapt one’s own clinical practice through deliberate practice and critically evaluate and respond to the psychosocial risks of clinical work, integrating self-care and supervision to sustain safe and effective clinical practice.
  10. Conduct clinical psychological assessment using appropriate tools, integrating and interpreting assessment data to inform case formulation and diagnosis.
  11. Select, tailor and implement evidence-based clinical interventions across complex and severe presentations, monitoring outcomes and adapting to evolving case formulation.
