Professional biography
Jay Merchant is passionate about advocacy, ethics and integrity and combines these three concepts in his courses at Bond University.
Jay is currently at the private bar in Brisbane and as a Barrister his practice is in Criminal Law, Coronial Inquests, Domestic Violence (breach and application matters), Migration Law, Professional Disciplinary and other Tribunal Matters. He is a former Police Officer and Former Officer in Charge of Police Prosecutions in the Queensland Police Service. Prior to migrating to Australia in 2010, he worked in Oil and Gas in Alberta, Canada.
In 2010, Jay migrated to Australia on a Distinguished Talent Visa with an Olympic endorsement for the Winter Olympic Sport of Curling and regularly competes at National and International events for Australia.
He is a regular guest lecturer in Canada and the United States in areas relating to law, government, and politics. He is also a television curling commentator, and radio and print media contributor for the sport of curling.
Jay's current research areas of interest include police procedure, police rank and the administration of justice, and incorporating Canadian Constitutional rights into Australian practice.
