Bondies star in Birmingham

Three Bull Sharks players have helped Australia’s Rugby 7s side make amends for a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, going one better at a packed Coventry Stadium in Birmingham early this morning our time.

Sisters Maddison Levi, Teagan Levi and their best mate Charlotte Caslick were part of the side that defeated Fiji 22-12 in the gold medal match. The proud island nation was banking on back-to-back wins over the Aussies after posting a shock win in their pool game.

The talented trio will be able to bring their experience from the Comm Games back to Bond University Rugby Club, when they represent the Bull Sharks in the Queensland Club State Championship.

The women in green and gold booked their spot in the decider after upsetting New Zealand 17-12 in their semi-final. The Kiwis relegated them to runner up at the event on the Gold Coast four years ago.

Maddison, who has been in sensational form, scored her tenth try for Australia in the thrilling win over Fiji.

The sisters’ parents celebrated the win from their home on the Gold Coast, popping a bottle of champagne at 6 o’clock this morning.

Ben Armbruster’s parents were also up early watching the Bachelor of Sport Management student finish second in his 50m backstroke semi-final, to qualify for the final tomorrow morning.

An early start too for the family of alumna Jenna Strauch, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduate won her first Commonwealth Games medal with silver in the 200m Breaststroke.

Yesterday morning teenager Flynn Southam led out Australia’s 4x100m relay team with a personal best time of 48.54s to place Australia in third position. Zac Incerti and William Yang then powered during the second and third leg respectively to put Australia into the lead before Kyle Chalmers charged home for gold.

Elijah Winnington collected bronze in the 200m freestyle final yesterday, but his ultimate prize came on Saturday morning when he won the 400m freestyle, backing up his 2022 world title.

Minna Atherton begins her campaign tonight in the 200m backstroke heats. Strauch (100m breaststroke heats) and Winnington (4x200m freestyle relay heats) are also on tonight’s schedule.
