Master Commercial Lighting Design: Transform Environments from Workplaces to Educational Spaces and Aged Care Environments

Our Commercial Lighting Design microcredential will equip you with the technical knowledge and creative expertise to design effective lighting solutions for commercial environments. This unique instructor-led online course is delivered over 10 weeks. You will learn how to interpret client briefs, apply lighting design principles across diverse commercial contexts, and develop solutions that balance functional requirements, visual comfort, and aesthetic considerations while meeting Australian Standards.


The course offers a blend of interactive forums, personalised coaching, and invaluable guidance from Dr Susan Lambert, an award-winning lighting designer with extensive international project experience.


The course assessment consists of developing a comprehensive lighting design proposal for an aged care community and presenting it to the class in a client-style presentation. The challenge of balancing safety, accessibility, visual comfort, and regulatory compliance will be presented to you, and you will have the opportunity to create lighting solutions that enhance wellbeing and performance in commercial spaces.


Upon completing the microcredential, your achievements will be formally recognised with a digital Certificate of Achievement from Bond University.

Meet your course instructor - Dr Susan Lambert

Susan is an accomplished Lighting Designer with a strong background in Architecture, Engineering, and Interior Design. She has worked on award-winning projects across Australia, New Zealand, and the US, including the Sydney Qantas terminal, the Sydney Superdome, and prestigious hotels like the Westin and Intercontinental. Her expertise spans residential projects, such as custom-designed homes, and exterior precincts like the University of NSW and Sydney Rocks laneways. 

Susan’s research focuses on the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, contributing to iconic projects like the Sydney GPO and Auckland's Customs House. Holding an MPhil and PhD in Architecture, she specialises in heritage lighting and daylight integration, passionately sharing her knowledge to advance the practice of lighting design.

  • This course is delivered online via 11 weekly live sessions. You will engage in 8 synchronous online facilitator-led workshops each session lasting approximately 1- 1.5 hours, and 3 small-group guided project meetings This course is delivered online via 10 weekly live sessions. You will engage in interactive forums each week, along with small-group collaborative coaching sessions to monitor your progress and provide mentoring during the design stages of your assessment project.


    You will also engage in an online 1:1 course welcome and introduction meeting with the course facilitator in advance of the first group session.

    Assessment and recognition
    Assessment for this course consists of two online quizzes (after weeks 4 and 6) and a comprehensive lighting design proposal project. The project requires you to develop a lighting design for an aged care community, including luminaire schedules, indicative costs, and compliance documentation. You will have the ability to tailor your assessment to suit the nature of your common projects: learners are provided the option to complete an assessment related to an aged care community or an office tenancy.

    You will present your design to the class in Week 8, simulating a client presentation. You must complete and pass both assessment tasks to be eligible for a digital Certificate of Achievement.

    Learners should be familiar with the fundamentals of lighting prior to taking this class, it is assumed that the learner has some prior experience. 

  • By the end of this course you will be able to


    1.    Apply fundamental practical principles of lighting design across a range of commercial contexts including offices, educational facilities, and aged care communities.
    2.    Interpret and respond to client briefs, analysing client needs and goals to develop appropriate lighting solutions.
    3.    Demonstrate the use of lighting as a creative medium to enhance functionality, visual comfort, and aesthetic appeal in commercial environments.
    4.    Generate and document lighting designs that comply with relevant Australian Standards including AS/NZS 1680 series, AS1428, and the National Construction Code.
