General information

Measurement 2 develops greater understanding of measurement principles and practices. Topics include trade preambles, measurement and billing of quantities for a range of trades and more complex building works. Students gain further experience in the use of computer software in preparing construction documentation

Attendance and learning activities: As successful completion of this subject is heavily dependent on attendance at all sessions (lectures and seminars), attendance will be monitored. Most sessions build on the content of the previous one. It is difficult for a student to recover if a session is missed. It is the responsibility of the student to catch up on any content missed, collect any materials handed out and complete set work outside class. It is also necessary for students to engage proactively and contribute positively to discussions, analysis and case studies. The assessments are an important part of developing the knowledge and understanding required to fulfil the minimum requirements of this subject. In addition to face to face contact time on campus, students should plan to spend minimum of 84 hours undertaking preparation/out of class work/personal study for this subject. This is intended as a general guide only for workload planning. More time may be required depending on the student's comprehension of the content delivered in class and aptitude for the subject. Please note that subsequent subjects assume the student has a full understanding of this subject - this content will not be repeated.

On successful completion of this subject the learner will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate measurement skills that build on those learnt in Measurement 1 and apply them to more complex trades and work items.
  2. Demonstrate advanced skills in interpretation of construction documents including drawings and specifications, and standards such as the Australian and New Zealand Standard Method Measurement of Building Works.
  3. Quantify two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, given sufficient and yet limited description of the dimensions.
  4. Interpret consultants’ drawings and specifications that provide limited detail of installations and interpolate as necessary to facilitate the measurement of building works to an acceptable level of accuracy.
  5. Prepare and generate Bills of Quantities using industry standard software.

Assessment criteria

High Distinction 85-100 Outstanding or exemplary performance in the following areas: interpretative ability; intellectual initiative in response to questions; mastery of the skills required by the subject, general levels of knowledge and analytic ability or clear thinking.
Distinction 75-84 Usually awarded to students whose performance goes well beyond the minimum requirements set for tasks required in assessment, and who perform well in most of the above areas.
Credit 65-74 Usually awarded to students whose performance is considered to go beyond the minimum requirements for work set for assessment. Assessable work is typically characterised by a strong performance in some of the capacities listed above.
Pass 50-64 Usually awarded to students whose performance meets the requirements set for work provided for assessment.
Fail 0-49 Usually awarded to students whose performance is not considered to meet the minimum requirements set for particular tasks. The fail grade may be a result of insufficient preparation, of inattention to assignment guidelines or lack of academic ability. A frequent cause of failure is lack of attention to subject or assignment guidelines.

Quality assurance

For the purposes of quality assurance, Bond University conducts an evaluation process to measure and document student assessment as evidence of the extent to which program and subject learning outcomes are achieved. Some examples of student work will be retained for potential research and quality auditing purposes only. Any student work used will be treated confidentially and no student grades will be affected.

Policy on late submission and extensions

A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted in writing by the subject Lecturer. The standard late penalty will be 10% of available marks for that assessment per calendar day late, with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Students must complete an Application for Extension to Assessment Items form when requesting an extension. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the approved extended date.

Policy on plagiarism

University’s Academic Integrity Policy defines plagiarism as the act of misrepresenting as one’s own original work: another’s ideas, interpretations, words, or creative works; and/or one’s own previous ideas, interpretations, words, or creative work without acknowledging that it was used previously (i.e., self-plagiarism). The University considers the act of plagiarising to be a breach of the Student Conduct Code and, therefore, subject to the Discipline Regulations which provide for a range of penalties including the reduction of marks or grades, fines and suspension from the University.

Measurement of excavation of various types – over site, pits, basements etc.; Measurement of cut and fill volumes; measurement of membranes and hardcore/filling.

An overview of the types of piles and piers and how they are measured

Measurement of external works such as driveways, carparks, landscaping

An overview of the measurement of water supply, plumbing fixtures, taps.

Measurement of stormwater and sewer drainage including pipework, pits, connections.

Measurement of structural steel members in bolted frames; Surface treatments; Fully welded (rigid) frames, connections, bolts.
