Shock for Kye in Tri

Kye Robinson

Kye Robinson has claimed his first Olympic distance international medal after finishing third in the 20-24 age group at the World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain.

The Bond Bachelor of Business student crossed the line in a time of 2:04:20.

Last year Robinson finished fourth in the 18–19 age group.

“Coming third was a bit of a shock to be honest, I expected to finish middle of the pack, and I would have thought that was a good effort,” he says.

“I was one of the youngest in the field still being 19 years old.”

Robinson came out of the swim leg of the race in 15th position but made up significant ground through transition and the bike leg.

“I had no idea where I was sitting at for the first part of the race,” he said.

“The [bike] course was pretty hilly. It was important to not burn too many matches on the climbs.”

Robinson entered the run in third.

“It was a straight, flat run course so I just picked my 3:30 pace and stuck to it,” he said.

“At the 6km mark I started to get a bit excited and started picking the pace up, and by the 9km mark I was holding a 3:25 [pace].

“It’s the fastest run I’ve done off a bike so I’m happy with that.”
