Bull Sharks to defend Fiji Day 7s title

Three men playing rugby

The Bull Sharks will defend their Fiji Day 7s title at Sunnybank this Saturday, marking the start of their Rugby 7s season.

Where will it be won

Coach Damon Virtue is cautiously optimistic about the season’s first contest, with the squad only coming together in the last few weeks following a hard-fought 15s season.

“We have only had three (training) sessions so we are a little underdone compared to our normal preparation but the boys have trained really well,” Virtue said.

A slew of new players will have their chance to impress with several experienced starters away for work or representative commitments.

“It’s a different side this week but it’s an exciting one. I’m pretty keen to see how some of the boys go and providing an opportunity to build some strong depth in the squad,” he said.

Who to watch

Even with some key players out of action, Virtue has named a strong squad featuring experienced first grade players like flyhalf Hayden Sargeant who will captain the side this weekend.

“Playmaking wise we are strong. We have Rhian Stowers, Sammy Dalton and Sargeant who are really experienced. It’s more about the other boys coming through within the forwards who are pretty new to the program,” Virtue said.

One such newcomer is Colts One forward of the year Zane Misios who will get his first taste of 7s with the Bull Sharks.

“Zane is really explosive and will bring a hard edge to our forward pack,” Virtue said.

“Campbell Harvey is another young talent and he is fast, so we are excited to see him in action.”

Bond will also field a women’s secondary team on the day, giving less experienced players more game time.

The Men’s first game kicks off at 8:10am against Marist with the Women’s first game beginning at 9:50am versus QPIIM.
