Bull Sharks gear up for crucial double headers

It’s a bumper weekend of Bull Sharks netball with the Sapphire, Ruby, and M-League squads all facing double headers.

With clashes against top-tier opponents like Cougars and Wildcats, the Sapphire and Ruby sides will need to be clinical across both days to stay in the finals hunt. Meanwhile, the M-League squad gears up for back-to-back contests against Thunder and Pulse, with some exciting new inclusions in the mix.

For the Sapphire Series squad, the focus is on reducing unforced errors and maintaining composure against the most consistent team in the comp. The Ruby side is out for redemption after a strong start against Cougars in Round 1 slipped away late, while Sunday’s match against the equally matched Wildcats is shaping up as a genuine eight-point scrap.

The Opposition

Cougars have long been the benchmark in this competition. To be competitive, we’ll need to minimise unforced errors in attack and stay disciplined and connected across our defensive unit. Wildcats, too, have shown they’re not to be underestimated, they play with intensity and grit. Our focus must remain on executing our game plan and controlling our output.

The Challenge

Double headers are always a test of endurance, particularly on day two. Smart rotation and strategic use of our depth will be critical, as will ensuring the squad recovers well between matches.

Shuffling the magnets

At this stage, we expect to have our full squad available, which will give us options and flexibility across both games.

Ones to watch

The Cougars clash will feature some exciting matchups, with both teams fielding a strong contingent of Reserves and SSN Training Partners. Expect a high-level contest with plenty of intensity.

The focus

Our key focus will be on being clinical and composed in our through-court attack, while taking full advantage of any opposition errors — whether unforced or created through our defensive pressure.

The final word

It’s shaping up to be a big weekend. We’ll run targeted, purposeful sessions this week based on available players. We are looking to see combinations continue to solidify at both ends of the court.

The opposition

Ocean Karekare
Former Sapphire Series player Ocean Karekare has become a key for the Ruby side in recent years.

The Cougars are tied at the top of the ladder and have always been a difficult matchup for us. In Round 1, we led for three quarters before their physicality got the better of us late in the game.
The Wildcats sit level with us on the ladder. Though this will be our first clash of the season, their recent performances show they’re capable of pushing top teams. We won’t be underestimating them.

The challenge

Both sides are known for their physicality, and we must rise to meet that challenge. Double headers demand a lot, physically and mentally, so preparation and recovery will be key.

Shuffling the magnets

No changes to the lineup at this stage.

Ones to watch

This weekend, we need all 11 athletes to step up and embrace their role in the team.

The focus

Staying united and connected across all units. We need to lift our defensive pressure and look to create and capitalise on our attacking opportunities.

The final word

It is time to step up, show up, and fight for the four. Let’s go, Bull Sharks.

M-League

Bull Sharks vs Thunder - Bull Sharks vs Pulse

The opposition

We have a challenging weekend of netball ahead as we face two new teams. Thunder are coming off a narrow 1-point loss to the Pulse and will be keen to get on the board with a win. With Australian Kelpie GA Jordan Webb in their lineup, they are a threat to any team. The Pulse have a strong lineup so a full team effort across the court will be needed to topple them.

The challenge

Mastering the basics is the key to this weekend’s double header. We must consistently execute our skills. Men’s netball is characterised by tough physical games, so we need to be precise with our ball placement and not invite the opposition to contest 50/50 balls. We have some players out this weekend so we will need to effectively integrate our replacement players into our structures and support them with clear direct communication.

Shuffling the magnets

With our captain away this weekend we have the services of former Queensland Men’s Open goal attack Jack Jordan, and we are excited to see him in the Bull Shark shirt with his flair and skill in 2-point shooting. Zac Hocking will step into the captaincy, and I look forward to him bringing his hard nose relentlessness to the team.

Ones to watch

The focus is on our team and playing Bull Sharks netball pure and simple.

The final word

A big weekend of netball awaits the men’s team but we are confident that if we consistently execute the basics we will be up to the task.
