They have secured the minor premiership but the Bull Sharks still have plenty to play for this weekend as they seek to maintain momentum ahead of a major semi-final.
Bond University will finish the regular season against Souths Magpies and are determined to take winning form into the finals and extend the club’s record of six wins from seven games on their home deck.
Last time they met
It was round 10 when the Bull Sharks travelled up the M1 to face the Magpies and they put on a second-half clinic to run away 45-28 victors.
Rhian Stowers was brilliant scoring three tries and coming within inches of claiming a fourth only to be denied by the sideline, while Jayden Ngamanu was dominant at the back, causing headaches with every touch.
Where will it be won
Experienced scrumhalf Vinnie Quigley was overjoyed with the result last weekend but knows the real competition is just beginning.
And with Souths falling short of the top four, their focus will be on wreaking havoc on the finals-bound Bull Sharks, bolstered by the return of some representative players.
“It was a real gutsy performance over GPS and we were proud of the fact we can dig deep to win in those crucial moments, but we know we can’t get too excited about a minor premiership - the job is only half done,” Quigley said.
“We can’t get complacent. Souths are a quality side and can put teams away if given the chance so for us it's just about sticking to our processes and performing well on the field this weekend.”
Quigley has been around Bond University since 2013 and has seen highs and lows over the years.
“It's been great to be back and reflect on how far this club has come,” he said.
“I remember back in the early days we would get half a dozen players at training and get beaten by 50 every week.
“Things have changed since then. Grant Anderson was my Colts coach and he’s done a tremendous job and deserves plenty of the credit for the growth which has seen several players come through the Bull Shark pathways and onto higher honours.”
It’s a big weekend for
The season is still alive for Colts One. With both the First Grade men’s and women's teams securing top-two finishes, it is the Colts One game that has the highest stakes. They need to defeat the ladder-leading Magpies to book their place into finals.
Last time these two sides met it was just one point the difference with the Magpies winning 18-17.
Bond currently sit in fifth place on 42 points and a victory will allow them to overtake UQ and lock in fourth spot.
Powerful frontrowers Harry Bell and Harrison Usher have been leading the charge but look out for wingers Rocco Gollings and Luca Aresani Pando who have been unstoppable out wide in recent weeks.
