Blyth set for clutch match against Canterbury Crusaders

Angus Blyth, centre, plays in one of the biggest matches of his career on Friday.

Bull Shark Angus Blyth has been selected for the Queensland Reds in their must-win Super Rugby Pacific quarter final against the Canterbury Crusaders on Friday night.

The timing of the match has worked well for the Reds with the Queensland side having finished the regular season against the Crusaders in New Zealand just a week ago. They have been based in Christchurch acclimatising and avoiding extra travel.

Blyth, a John Eales Rugby Excellence Scholar at Bond University, has been a part of the Reds program since 2017 with 36 caps to date.

He said the side was pleased with aspects of their last game against the Crusaders despite the 13-point loss.

“Finals footy is a completely different ball game,” Blyth said.

“We took plenty of positives (out of the last match) but need to be more clinical and physical in all aspects of our game this week.”

There are no second chances from here for the Reds who must defeat the Crusaders to progress to higher honours.

“The three-game finals format is completely different this year which means that every game could be your last, so we are just focusing on the challenge in front and are ready for a tough match.” Blyth said.

Bond University halfback Spencer Jeans, who made his Queensland debut earlier in the year, has felt a shift in focus this week.

“There’s been a real change of energy in the group. The boys know what’s at stake and are gearing up for a big battle ahead," Jeans said.

The Queensland Reds as they take on the Crusaders at 5:05pm on Friday night live on Stan Sport.
