Juris Doctor Online

Where will your degree take you?

Completing the JD Online opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities in both the legal and non-legal profession. Graduates who meet the academic requirements for admission as a lawyer in Australia can pursue careers as a solicitor,  barrister  or in-house counsel. Beyond traditional practice, your  skills  position you for careers in corporate governance, compliance, policy development and more.

If you are seeking further specialisation, you can continue your studies with a Master of Laws  or a Master of Laws in Enterprise Governance, choosing to specialise if you prefer and enhancing your competitiveness in an evolving legal  environment.

Outcomes

Solicitor

Upon being admitted to the legal profession, you can work as a solicitor in a law firm, a government organisation, or a community legal centre. You can choose to specialise in a particular area of practice or be a generalist. Law firms may be large, medium, small or boutique.

Barrister

Upon being admitted to the legal profession and completing the bar practice course, you can work as a barrister. A barrister is an independent advocate and advisor and is often highly skilled in a particular area of law.

In-House Counsel

Upon being admitted to the legal profession, you can work as an in-house counsel, where you will use your legal expertise for the benefit of a particular organisation. You will often be practising in a range of areas of law particular to the needs of the organisation.

Non-legal profession

You might choose not to be admitted as a legal practitioner, but to instead use your legal expertise in any one of a wide range of non-legal careers. Your legal skills - including your critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, conflict resolution and advocacy skills - will make you highly attractive to potential employers. Potential non-legal roles include management consulting, politics, investment banking and more.

Professional accreditation

If you want to be admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia, you  are required to  complete a practical legal training program (such as the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) or traineeship) following the completion of the JD Online.

The accrediting body in Queensland is the Legal Practitioners' Admission Board (LPAB). Further information on becoming a legal practitioner in QLD, including the LPAB's English Language Proficiency Guidelines, is available from the Queensland Law Society here.
