Professional biography

Dr Oyuka Byambasuren, MD, MMedRes, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at the Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare at Bond University. Dr Byambasuren leads a research program on Long COVID, focusing on building capacity in primary care to manage Long COVID in the community and on evaluating potential treatments. She has secured more than $5 million in competitive research funding.

National and International Leadership

Dr Byambasuren’s leadership roles include Founding Evidence-Informed Fellow of the Pandemic EVIDENCE Collaboration at the University of Oxford, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Representative for Wiser Healthcare, expert working group member for the National Self-Care Policy, and coordinator of the IEBH Consumer Advisory Group. 

Research Impact

Dr Byambasuren’s evidence synthesis and policy-focused research have influenced national and international health policy and clinical practice. In Australia, her work evaluating the effectiveness of telehealth services informed Medicare’s decision to extend telehealth funding, enabling more than 118 million telehealth services for over 17 million Australians in 2021–2022. Her evaluation of Medicare Benefits Schedule health assessment items has shaped primary care policy, and her evidence update for the National Heart Foundation’s cardiovascular risk assessment guideline informs the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease nationwide. Her pandemic-related research has accrued more than 1,500 citations, with several outputs ranking in the top 1% worldwide, reflecting its contribution to the global understanding of COVID-19 and informing WHO guidance. Her work has been widely featured in national and international media, including The Guardian, ABC, Bloomberg Health Podcast, The Lancet Primary Care Podcast, The Project, and Vox, reaching millions of readers and viewers globally.
