Estel Ncube’s graduation from Bond University doubled as a reunion for 26 family members, some in traditional Zimbabwean dress.
The Melburnian, who graduated with a Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice, said the turnout would have been even bigger if the ceremony had been held in her hometown.
“It was a headache getting everyone together, but definitely worth it,” Ms Ncube said.
“You guys are lucky this is not in Melbourne, otherwise there would have been 100 of us here!”
Relatives came from Sydney, Melbourne, New Zealand and Brisbane but it was her father Japhet Ncube who reflected the family’s Zimbabwean heritage most visibly.
He was resplendent in traditional attire from Matabeleland, including an animal pelt, headdress and an elaborately carved walking stick.
Ms Ncube said she had “absolutely loved” her time at Bond.
“Dietetics was hard, but once I found my passion between entrepreneurship and helping people through the Transformer program, I found my place at Bond.
“I’m excited for what the future holds, and being a part of the alumni community.”
But first, some family time.
“We’ve got a nice big dinner planned - enjoy a few drinks and just celebrate together. I’m super excited,” she said.
