Students get a taste of journalist life

(L-R) Journalism students Tamsin Read and Ella Strange gear up to activate a student newsroom ahead of the 2022 Women in Media Conference.

Bond University’s cohort of burgeoning journalists will be out to impress the best in the business with their student-run newsroom at the 2022 Women in Media conference.

The annual conference, held at Bond University, is expected to attract over 300 media professionals from across the country for two days of workshops and panel discussions led by some of Australia’s most respected media identities.

Over the course of the conference, students will be encouraged to interview journalists from around the country, profile prominent panel members, and develop their mobile journalism skills.

After the last in-person conference in 2019 almost every student involved with the pop-up newsroom secured a job in the media, with the big names in attendance noting their skills and enterprising attitude.

Ella Strange, a third year Bachelor of International Relations and Journalism student said the event offered a rare opportunity to be surrounded by the best in the business.

"It's a really exciting opportunity to be surrounded by some of the country’s most respected journalists," Ms Strange said.

“I’ve just finished interning with ABC Gold Coast, so right now I’m just trying to soak up as much journalistic experience as I can.”

Bond University’s Journalism program has a track record of industry success with students entering television, radio, print, podcasting, and corporate jobs both within Australia and around the world.

Senior Teaching Fellow of Journalism, Rob Layton, said the conference opened up huge opportunities for students to showcase their skills to the right people.

“The Women in Media conference is a wonderful opportunity for our Journalism students to connect with some of the biggest names in Australian Journalism,” said Mr Layton.

“Following the last conference, the biggest employer of journalists in Australia – News Corp – reached out to us and asked that the students apply for jobs in their cadet program.

“That’s what gives our students the edge – industry connections and real-world experience.”

Bond University is proud to be the foundation sponsor of Women in Media since 2017.

The 2022 Women in Media Conference takes place on September 9 and 10 at Bond University. Key speakers at this year’s conference include Leigh Sales, Lisa Millar, Beverley McGarvey and Natalie Barr.
