Vernon is the Head of Program for Exercise & Sports Science within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine. He leads the teaching focused on the foundations of exercise and sports science and exercise testing, prescription and delivery, but also teaches as part of a team for other undergraduate subjects. He has an active research profile working on the molecular bases of training adaptation in skeletal muscle, and supervises postgraduate students working on the effects of hot environments in team sport players and the energy and hydration status of athletes in training. Vernon has previously held the position of Head of Graduate Research for the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine.
