Bond University Professor named in global Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list

Bond University Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice (CREBP) director, Professor Paul Glasziou, has been named in the esteemed annual Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers 2018 List.

Now in its fifth year, the list recognises the most globally influential researchers as determined by their peers based on who has consistently achieved high citation counts over a decade.

Placement on the Highly Cited Researchers 2018 List has been recognised as a significant achievement, with the Web of Science serving as the basis for regular listings of researchers whose citation records position them in the top one per cent by citations for their field.

This year’s list continues to recognise researchers whose citation records position them in the very highest strata of influence and impact, including 17 Nobel laureates.

Professor Glasziou FRACGP, PhD is regarded as a world leader in evidence-based practice. He was a part-time General Practitioner, and recipient of a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHRMC) Australia Fellowship, which he commenced at Bond University in July 2010 with the establishment of the University’s CREBP. Professor Glasziou was previously the Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford, United Kingdom, from 2003-2010.

Professor Glasziou has received numerous awards and accolades over his career, including the Bridges Webb medal in 2011 - an award recognising Australian Association for Academic Primary Care Inc. members who have made international research contributions to academic activities in the GP environment.

He has written several books related to evidence based practice, and has authored over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Reducing waste from incomplete or unusable reports of biomedical research and Antibiotics for acute otitis media in children. He also co-authored the Handbook of Non-Drug Interventions, which is making effective non-drug treatments more visible and easier to use for physicians, and the Better reporting of interventions: template for intervention description and replication checklist and guide.

Professor Glasziou said one of his key areas of interest was identifying and removing the barriers to using high-quality research in everyday clinical practice.

“At CREBP, my talented team and I are passionate about finding solutions to largely neglected problems in healthcare and important areas of clinical practice that researchers don’t typically pay sufficient attention to,” he said.

“Important areas of focus for our Centre are promoting non-pharmaceutical interventions for patients, and ways of reducing over-prescription of antibiotics in primary care, which is creating huge problems when it comes to patient resistance to these treatments.

“Our centre has calculated that over $100 billion is spent every year globally on what we call ‘waste in research’ – with almost half of medical research undertaken not even being published.

“It is areas such as these that don’t get a great deal of air time. At CREBP, our aim is make a difference with our research to create better communication between clinicians and researchers, and a clearer understanding of the causes of, and solutions to, gaps between research evidence and its application in practice.”

Bond University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Keitha Dunstan, said the University was incredibly proud to have Professor Glasziou as an eminent member of its research and teaching community.

“Professor Glasziou and his team at CREBP continue to lead the country, and in many instances the world, with their cutting-edge research,” she said.

“On behalf of Bond University, I would like to congratulate him on being named alongside some of the world’s leading researchers and Nobel laureates on this prestigious list.

“Bond University is extremely privileged to have Professor Glasziou on board in both a research and teaching capacity.”

Annette Thomas, CEO of the Scientific & Academic Research group at Clarivate Analytics, warmly congratulated the researchers who appeared in this year’s list.

“Congratulations to Professor Paul Glasziou of Bond University’s Centre for Evidence-Based Practice,” she said.

“The advancement of scientific endeavour represents a critical activity for individual research institutions and entire nations.

“The Highly Cited Researchers 2018 List helps to identify the researchers who are having the greatest impact on the research community as measured by the rate at which their work is being cited by others and that contributes so greatly to extending the frontier and gaining knowledge and innovations for society - contributions that make the world healthier, safer, richer, and more sustainable.”
