OCTY74-100: Occupational Therapy Doctoral Research Capstone Internship

Description

This doctoral-level capstone internship is designed to develop advanced research skills in one or more of the following occupational therapy practice areas: clinical skills, research translation, administration, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education or theory development. This community-based internship builds upon the background research proposal and pilot project completed in pre-requisite coursework during the Master of Occupational Therapy, including Health Research Design and Planning, Research Internship A and Research Internship B, occupational therapy coursework and clinical placements. Under the supervision of an academic mentor and in collaboration with an industry partner, students will engage in an independent scholarly study that meets personal learning objectives and makes a contribution to new knowledge in the field.  The duration of the capstone doctoral internship is a minimum of 14 weeks (560 hours) and provides the foundation for subsequent development of a doctoral thesis.

Learning outcomes

  1. Develop specific personal learning goals to be achieved through the design and implementation of a capstone doctoral research experience.
  2. Design and implement a scholarly study that aligns with current research priorities and advances knowledge translation, professional practice, service delivery, or professional issues.
  3. Develop and disseminate scholarly reports appropriate for professional presentation or publication in a peer reviewed journal that supports the skills of clinical practice.
  4. Apply principles of ethical and culturally sensitive processes and practices to the design and implementation of a doctoral capstone research project.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.
