Description
Law and Medicine is a postgraduate elective subject offered by the Faculty of Law. This subject aims to provide a sound introduction to the law relevant to the health care system, health care professionals and related scientific and technological developments. There will be an examination of the legal structures that impact on health care, focusing specifically on the regulatory framework controlling the health care system and the health care professional. Specific attention is given to liability and accountability issues, including medical negligence, consent, confidentiality and privacy. The subject will canvass such topical issues as: patients' rights, tissue transplantation, genetic engineering, assisted reproductive technology and surrogacy, euthanasia, cloning, research and experimentation. Although the subject will concentrate on the Australian jurisdiction, comparisons and contrasts will be made with other countries, especially other common law jurisdictions.
