General Information

This subject introduces students to the importance of the body-mind link. Basic anatomical and physiological aspects of the human body and its influence on human behaviour will be covered. The focus of this subject will be on investigating how physical functions impact on the development of acute and chronic psychological disorders.

    Attendance and learning activities: Attendance is compulsory for this subject and students must attend all lectures. Students who have legitimate reasons for non-attendance such as illness or unforeseen personal crisis should 1) contact the lecturer-in-charge via email to report their absence and 2) provide the lecturer-in-charge with a medical or similar certificate. Further, learning of new material will occur via direct exposure to practical problem-focused tasks, group interaction, and structured discussion. Students will be required to build their understanding of key concepts by engaging in active and on-topic participation throughout the subject.

Generative Artificial Intelligence in Assessment

Instructions on the use of Gen-AI are given for each assessment task; it is your responsibility to adhere to these instructions.

    Paper-based Examination (Closed) Final Examination: 3. Two-hour final exam that will be based upon the material presented in the class from Week 7 until Week 12. Students will be assessed on the issues highlighted during completion of case studies and content from the lecture notes. This exam will consist of short answer questions designed to test students’ knowledge of the different systems of the body and the information learnt in class on genetics. Students will also be required to address a number of hypothetical case studies designed to test skills in applying the Biopsychosocial approach, interpretation of multi-source information and their ability to answer hypothetical clients’ requests. This assessment task will account for 45 percent of the marks to be earned for this subject. 45.00% Final Examination Period 1,2
    Paper-based Examination (Closed) Mid-semester Examination: Two-hour exam for your mid-semester examination will be based upon the material presented in class from Week 1 until Week 5. Students will be assessed on the issues highlighted during completion of case studies and content from the lecture notes. This exam will consist of short answer questions designed to test students’ knowledge of the systems reviewed so far. Students will also be required to address a number of hypothetical case studies designed to test skills in applying the Biopsychosocial approach, interpretation of multi-source information and their ability to answer hypothetical clients’ requests. This assessment task will account for 25 percent of the marks to be earned for this subject. 25.00% Week 6 (Mid-Semester Examination Period) 1,2
    Essay Assignment: One literature review of approximately 2,000 words that will involve students in selecting one system of the body reviewed in class. Students will have to work on an illness or psychological disorder that would affect the system they chose to review. Students will conduct a review of the research literature as it relates to this strategy in order to identify how the illness or psychological disorder could affect a person on a biological, psychological and social level. The focus of this assignment will be on undertaking the following sequence of steps – specifying the system and illness or psychological disorder that will be the focus of the literature review, describing how the system functions normally, describing how the system functions abnormally when one suffers from the chosen illness or psychological disorder, identifying the biological, psychological and social abnormalities experienced by individuals suffering from the chosen illness or psychological disorder, and creating a hypothetical case study of a client experiencing some difficulties due to the illness or psychological disorder picked, using the Biopsychosocial approach. This review paper will account for 25 percent of the marks to be earned for this subject. 25.00% Week 11 1,2,3

  • Assessment criteria

    High Distinction 85-100 Outstanding or exemplary performance in the following areas: interpretative ability; intellectual initiative in response to questions; mastery of the skills required by the subject, general levels of knowledge and analytic ability or clear thinking.
    Distinction 75-84 Usually awarded to students whose performance goes well beyond the minimum requirements set for tasks required in assessment, and who perform well in most of the above areas.
    Credit 65-74 Usually awarded to students whose performance is considered to go beyond the minimum requirements for work set for assessment. Assessable work is typically characterised by a strong performance in some of the capacities listed above.
    Pass 50-64 Usually awarded to students whose performance meets the requirements set for work provided for assessment.
    Fail 0-49 Usually awarded to students whose performance is not considered to meet the minimum requirements set for particular tasks. The fail grade may be a result of insufficient preparation, of inattention to assignment guidelines or lack of academic ability. A frequent cause of failure is lack of attention to subject or assignment guidelines.

    Quality assurance

    For the purposes of quality assurance, Bond University conducts an evaluation process to measure and document student assessment as evidence of the extent to which program and subject learning outcomes are achieved. Some examples of student work will be retained for potential research and quality auditing purposes only. Any student work used will be treated confidentially and no student grades will be affected.

Policy on late submission and extensions

A late penalty will be applied to all overdue assessment tasks unless an extension is granted by the subject coordinator. The standard penalty will be 10% of marks awarded to that assessment per day late with no assessment to be accepted seven days after the due date. Where a student is granted an extension, the penalty of 10% per day late starts from the new due date.

University’s Academic Integrity Policy defines plagiarism as the act of misrepresenting as one’s own original work: another’s ideas, interpretations, words, or creative works; and/or one’s own previous ideas, interpretations, words, or creative work without acknowledging that it was used previously (i.e., self-plagiarism).
