Sting time at The Canal: Bull Sharks take on Aspley Hornets in elimination final

Finals footy returns to The Canal on Saturday as our senior women take on Aspley in a QAFLW elimination final.

Three weeks ago we beat Aspley by 35 points but the opposition will present a tough challenge this weekend, with a few talented senior players back in their side.

The secret to victory for the Bull Sharks will be to remain calm under pressure and stick to the game plan with minimum fuss.

The QFA reserve men will also play on Saturday, taking on Coolangatta in a qualifying final at Carrara.

Our minor premier QFA seniors side gets a week off as does the QAFLW reserves who finished second.

Bull Sharks v Aspley

Last time we met

Rd 14, 2025

Bull Sharks won 7.6 (48) - 2.1 (13)

The opposition

They’ll present a much tougher challenge this week compared to two weeks ago, as they welcome back two or three really talented senior players. They’re a quick team who are also really strong in the contest.

The challenge

The challenge is to get the game on our terms especially around stoppage. If we can get the ball inside forward 50 deep, it allows us to defend the front half of the ground, which is what we’ve been good at the last three weeks.

Shuffling the magnets

Our reserves had a great win on the weekend - Chiara Nyhaus, Maddy Furlong, Sarah Heptinstall and Tilly Clarkson are all playing a real strong brand of footy and continue to put pressure on our senior girls to hold their spots in the team.

Jasmyn Davidson
Ella Calleja

Ones to watch

Aspley have one of the best goal kicking tall forwards in the competition in Jess Stallard, who kicked five goals on the weekend. It’s imperative that we stop her from being a key contributor. Our starting midfield - Maisy Evans, Shannon Nolan, Jasmyn Davidson and Ella Calleja have been outstanding the last three weeks at setting the scene for us.

Kendra Blattman has won the goal kicking award and gives us a real key target.

The focus

Stay calm and trust in the system and the process. Finals footy is about the team that trusts in their game plan and executes with a minimum of fuss.

The final word

Win and we stay alive, lose and the season is over.
