Shootout Sharks: Bull Sharks claim soccer championship

What is it about the Bond University Bull Sharks and grand finals?

If the rugby and AFL deciders were tough on the heart, our women’s soccer team didn’t help matters with their own extra-time grand final win.

The Bull Sharks senior women took on the Nerang Eagles in the South Coast Div 1 grand final over the weekend. It was a pulsating, neck-and-neck battle that saw scores level on two goals apiece at full time, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

Bull Sharks goalkeeper Jet Davis was the hero of the hour as she saved two of Nerang’s five penalty shots.

The Bull Sharks sailed four goals past the Nerang keeper, with the sealing strike fittingly kicked by team captain Meah Davis.

Davis had started the game on fire, kicking a goal in the first 10 minutes. The Bull Sharks made it 2-0 soon after, before momentum swung to the Eagles.

They booted two of their own in a 10-minute spell before the Bull Sharks put the brakes on.

The scores were locked at 2-2 for the remaining 45 minutes of the match as neither side could gain the upper hand – leaving the outcome to be decided by a shootout.

The Bull Sharks’ victory caps off an incredible season for the club, who were also crowned league premiers after finishing at the top of the table, winning 15 of their 16 games.

Head coach of the squad Laikha Macwilson was named the league’s Coach of the Year in just her second season in the role.

“I’m so lucky the girls stuck by me and trusted me for the past two years, even though I had no idea what I was doing 90 per cent of the time," Wilson said.

“Words can’t explain how proud I am of this team and our bond."
