Reds win the battle for cross-code star Doblo

Not too many athletes get the call to represent Queensland in two sports in the same week – but for Eva Doblo, one of those calls mattered more.

The Bachelor of Sport Management student made her senior debut for the Queensland Reds at the Festival of Rugby in Narrabri, taking a giant step towards her dream of a professional rugby career.

In the very same week, she was also picked in the Queensland Open OzTag squad for the national championships after starring for her club, the Miami Raptors, in the intrastate carnival.

A late convert from OzTag, where she has already represented Australia, Doblo’s rise in rugby has been nothing short of electric.

The Bull Sharks are a hard side to break into having won four straight Queensland Premier Rugby premierships, three state 7s crowns and two Australian Club Championships.

Doblo forced her way in after just a handful of games with the Bond Pirates and has starred in the two most recent premierships.

Her form throughout 2025 earned the Queensland call-up alongside Bull Sharks teammates Zara Colless, Paris Mohr, Jemma Bemrose Ava Wareta and 7s star Kaelyn Passi.

“Playing for Reds last weekend was an incredible opportunity,” Doblo said.
“The speed, the physicality and standard was so high and I took a lot out of the experience, especially around the professionalism and the coaching I gained. And it was great to experience alongside the other Bond girls. It’s definitely motivated me to keep improving and striving to play at that level of footy.”

And while her selection in Queensland’s open OzTag team shows her talent stretches across codes, it’s rugby where she sees her future.

“OzTag is quite seasonal and you really can’t go far, whereas in rugby there are so many opportunities,” she said. “That’s what I want to keep chasing.”
