He’s been called a teddy bear, a father figure, and a rock – you could also say Lawrence Faifua is the reason Bond University has the nation’s premier women’s rugby program.
The incredible talent in the Bull Sharks’ ranks wins the big finals, and those players are here because of Lawrence.

The Bull Sharks are a well oiled machine their historic era of dominance has included a three-peat of Queensland Premier Rugby titles and a four-year undefeated streak in 7s. They have also won the only two Australian Club Championship women’s grand finals against Gordon in 2023 and Sydney University earlier this year.
Faifua was a constant presence throughout - whether as head coach or right-hand man – and in 2025 he’s once again steering the ship.
His incredible popularity and undeniable contribution to Bond University Rugby was recognised last season when he was awarded Fabian Fay Club Person of the Year.

He doesn’t seek the spotlight, in fact, he never actively puts his hand up for the head coaching gig. But when others move on, Faifua is always there to step in, steady the ship, and keep the standards sky-high.
But back to Teddy Bears.
You’d have more luck hearing one speak than getting Lawrence to talk about himself – so Bond Sport journalist, Summer Leury caught up with some of the Bull Sharks' key players to reflect on Faifua’s influence – both on and off the field – and what makes this squad a contender for a fourth straight premiership.
What makes Lawrence so important to the team?
Zoe Hanna
“Lawrence has always been around in some fashion but having him back as a head coach provides our team with a great structure and trust.”

Zara Colless
“It feels like homecoming having Lawrence back this season! He is the rock of this team and our little family. He knows each girl individually and what makes them tick, which is very special and important, especially within women’s sport.”
How has Lawrence shaped your rugby career?
Grace Baker
“Lawrence has been part of my rugby journey since I was 15. He’s coached me through touch footy, rugby 7s, and now 15s. He’s watched me grow and develop as an athlete and was even there when I made my debut for the Reds. He’s always pushed me to be my best.”

Zara Colless
“Lawrence is one of the reasons I’m still playing rugby. Without him pulling me from my local club, I probably wouldn't be playing anymore. He has coached me from the age of 17 right through to now at 22. I have definitely had highs and lows as a player and Lawrence has been through them all with me.”
Lawrence is more than just a coach. How has he impacted your life off the field?
Zara Colless
“Lawrence is a teddy bear! For many of the girls, he is an open ear and arms ready to give a hug. For me, he has acted as a pillar of reassurance when I’ve needed it. Personally, my year has been quite rocky, but Lawrence would call or pull me aside and remind me that I’m on the right track, he’s got my back and ultimately makes sure that I am happy.”
Grace Baker
“Lawrence is like a second dad to me and to many of the girls. He genuinely looks out for us on and off the field, often calling or checking in throughout the week. The culture he’s created at Bond feels more like a family than just a team.”
What role does your team culture play in your success?

Zoe Hanna
“The girls are all teammates and friends who play footy because they love the sport, but they also get to play it with likeminded people. Within the team we value being a good person just as highly as playing good footy. The group of girls we have come from all different backgrounds but share similar values of culture.”
Grace Baker
“When your team feels like family, the trust on the field comes naturally. I believe our strong culture is a major reason we’ve been able to win three premierships. We have honest, open conversations, and we hold each other accountable. That’s what drives our success.”
Eva Doblo
“The culture and bond within the team is so special. Not only just between the girls but also with the coaches. The trust and connection we have definitely reflects the way we play, and I believe that contributes to our success.”
Can this team go all the way for a fourth straight year?

Grace Baker
“The connection we have is special, and we’ve been building throughout the season. As we head into finals, we’ll have our strongest team ready to go, and we’re determined to bring home that fourth premiership. I think we just need to fine-tune the little things and stay consistent and connected as a group whilst executing under pressure. We have the chemistry—it’s now time to sharpen our focus to achieve that goal.”
Zoe Hanna
“I think the chance to get a 4th premiership back-to-back is definitely there. The other competition is quite strong, however that hasn't stopped us in the past. If we are in the right mindset and turn up on the day, we will have it in the bag.”
