Newcomers hit their stride in victory against Burleigh

It was a strong weekend for the Bull Sharks against QFA heavyweights and rivals, Burleigh.

The men overcame a slow start against the Bombers to kick 11 goals after the first quarter. Newcomers Ned Betts and Matt Smith put on outstanding performances in the midfield and forward line, respectively.

The win secures the Bull Shark at the top of the ladder as the men go into a well deserved bye this round.

Bull Sharks won 11.9 (75) - 6.8 (44)

How it was won

AFL men celebrating

After a slow start to the game, we managed to get into the groove and kick three unanswered goals in the second quarter. There were no standout individuals in the first part of the game as it was a scrappy affair with many turnovers. Our forward 50 entries were poor which gave the opposition time and space to bring the ball back. Post quarter time we kicked into gear and piled on multiple goals to get us going.

What you’re happy with

We kicked 11 goals to 3 from quarter time which was terrific & shows our ability to kick goals quickly. Our ability to break through the oppositions defence was elite on the weekend as Burleigh set up well behind the ball. The other aspect that made us happy was the spread of goal kickers, we had multiple goal kickers throughout the game.

Bull Sharks Footy

For most of the game we played our way. We pride ourselves on our contest work and ability to pressure the opposition into turning the ball over. This was evident after quarter time through the midfield dominance and supply to our forwards. This is our game style and something that has us on the top of the ladder.

Work to do

We need to continue to work on our skill execution and taking care of the footy with ball in hand, we are turning the ball over too much at times and giving the opposition far too many opportunities on turnover.

Trademark players

This week there are two shoutouts. Ned Betts who is a 6’3 athletic wingman, he played an outstanding game and is only getting better each week. Matty Smith is the other player who continues to get better each week. Both players came into the side late given work and university commitments and have added real depth and quality to the group. Betts would be a nightmare to match up on given his running ability and size, and Matty Smith is also a handful given his footy smarts and body strength.
