The Bond University Bull Sharks’ home ground, affectionately known as The Canal, will undergo a major upgrade of its AFL amenities later this season.
The AFL ground is widely regarded as one of the superior playing venues on the Gold Coast. However, other than the clubhouse bar, the off-field amenities for spectators are limited.
The situation will change later this season with the opening of a covered grandstand.
Work commenced last week on the construction of a huge 675 square metre membrane roof which will cover the 540 spectator seats.
Planning for the construction has been complex, as explained by the University’s Director of Facilities Jared Taylor.
“Our goal was to avoid encroaching on the viewing lines which created an engineering challenge as to how to construct such a large span without installing multiple vertical posts,” Mr Taylor said.
“The solution resulted in a design requiring over 50 tonnes of steel.
“We also undertook sun studies to ensure that the design would bring shade at various times of the year.”
The end result will be a stunning addition to the facilities at the ground.

The design includes a covered area at the western end of 75 square metres with provision for power to allow for the set-up of food vans, coffee carts and a bar.
The design also includes lighting, sound, wifi and security cameras built into the structure.
AFL Club President Sam Whish-Wilson was delighted with the news and final design.
“Our club will really get a boost from this new facility,” Mr Whish-Wilson said.
“Many of our players have young families, parents and friends who love to attend games, and this will make it far more comfortable for them to come and cheer on our teams.”
The next challenge is the constant inclement weather which has delayed elements of the construction.
However, work is underway both on and off campus and the project is due for completion by mid-July in time for the Past Players Day on August 9.
The work is being undertaken by Simon Newitt of Steel Construct Australia.
