Finals fever: Bull Sharks set for a bumper weekend

Bull Sharks

It is the biggest weekend of the season for the Bull Sharks with the entire club competing in finals.

The minor premiership winning QFA side can advance directly to the grand final with a win over Carrara at The Canal.

Also at The Canal, the QAFLW seniors and QFA reserves play knock out finals against Coorparoo and Carrara respectively.

The QAFLW reserves are off to Southport for a qualifying final against the Sharks.

Last time we met

Bull Sharks won 17.5 (107) - 4.10 (34)

It was one of the best total team performances of the Andy Lovell era. To a man, everyone played their role to the letter.

AFL students
Nick Francis, Miles Enders, Finlay Gray, Tommy Bennet and Matthew Leskiw.

The opposition

Our opposition this week present another significant challenge. Carrara have been a team we’ve had some great success and some poor performances against in recent times. They are a well drilled, experienced team who have winners across the ground.

The challenge

It’s a big challenge. Carrara don’t like us, and we don’t like them especially with the added element of finals. We know we have the firepower and steel to match whatever they offer up. While we believe we have the skills and dash to counteract anything they want to throw at us, we also understand they have their weapons also.

Shuffling the magnets

There could be up to 4 changes this week depending on some critical fitness tests throughout the week. We need to pick the best side available, and we are hoping to be at or near full strength come Saturday.

Ones to watch

The usual suspects in Miles Enders, Nick Francis and Tommy Bennett and our blue-collar specialists in Nick Bare, Oscar Pledge, Will King, Hunter Booth and Archie Prime will be super important for us.

The focus

Embrace the early heat that will come and grind the opposition into the ground with our work rate and finishing skills will be the order of the day.

The final word

It’s the best time of year so there’s no more words, just action.

Bull Sharks v Coorparoo at The Canal in Semi Final

Last time we met

Rd 16, 2025 at The Canal

Bull Sharks won 10. 7 (67) - 3.2 (20)

We dominated centre bounce, which meant that we owned territory and were able to get repeat inside 50s. It was a 21-player effort, there were no passengers. It's our best footy for the year.

The opposition

They’ll present another really tough physical challenge. We beat them comfortably two weeks ago here at home, but I expect them to be better prepared and aggressive with their attack on the body of the ball.

The challenge

The challenge is to maintain our belief in our game plan and structure. We don’t have to do anything outside the box, but we need to bring high energy and a collective mindset to play Bull Sharks Footy.

Alicia Withers has been suspended for one week for a sling tackle, so we have to find a replacement there. Milla Brosnen Ball who’s a dynamic ruck/tall forward is available, as is Georgia Johnson in the midfield. The usual reserves suspects - Sarah Heptinstall, Izzy Lowe and Madi Furlong are all up for contention.

Ones to watch

Our skipper, Grace Moodie is having a really good season down back. Along with  Jemma Blair, they’ve been the rock of our defence. Small forwards Milly Ella, Brianna Moyes and Aleah Stringer have given us great defensive pressure and crumbing prowess in the forward 50.

The focus

We’ve got to win contest; we’ve got to be hard and tough. It’s most likely going to be a wet day so we must have an aggressive mindset and a willingness to get our hands dirty.

The final word

We have to keep winning to stay in the race and be there at the end of the year.
