Dominant Bull Sharks claim another scalp

The Bull Sharks QFA juggernaut continued at The Canal on Saturday with a commanding victory over Robina.

The Roos came out firing and had the hosts on the back foot early, keeping the Bull Sharks goalless for the opening quarter.

But the cream rose to the top after the first break as the Bull Sharks hammered home 15 goals to record a 61-point victory.

In the QAFLW, the reigning premiers Southport set up a win with a strong opening half but Bond’s Director of AFL Andy Lovell was pleased with how his side fought their way into the contest after the main break.

Bond v Robina at The Canal

Bull Sharks won 15.11 (101) to 5.10 (40)

How it was won

We came to life in the second term after a sluggish opening quarter. Our defenders saw most of the action in the first term although we managed to get on top all over the ground and never looked threatened from that point on.

What you’re happy with

Nick Bare
Medical student Nick Bare in action against Robina

I’m happy with the response after quarter time. We knew that Robina would challenge us early and probably underestimated their ability to score. They went into quarter time ahead and our response for the next three terms was outstanding.

Bull Sharks Footy

We played our brand of footy for three quarters; however we need to arrest the poor start which we will work on this week at training.

The work to do

We have several players who are quite sore after a couple of very physical games. We will get the group right early in the week then look to wind up as we take on a very solid opponent this week in Carrara.

Trademark players

Alex Crow was outstanding who has worked his backside off to get himself back after an ACL injury. He’s a very popular member of the team so the group are very happy for him.

Bond v Southport at The Canal

Bull Sharks lost 9.7 (61) to 5.3 (33)

 How it was lost

Shannon Nolan
Reigning best and fairest Shannon Nolan has been in superb form.

They beat us in uncontested possession, and they scored their goals directly off the back of our turnovers. They had two really dominant midfielders in Steph O'Brien and Chiara Zaraffa. Essentially, Southport took their chances a little bit better than we did.

 What made you happy

I’m happy with our second half endeavour. We won contested ball and clearances and looked dangerous when we went inside 50, whereas in the first half we were tentative and second to the ball.

 Bull Sharks Footy

It was a tale of two halves. We were second to the footy and a bit hesitant and reactive in the first half and hence we made a number of really crucial skill errors. But in the second half we were far more aggressive and proactive in our decision making and were able to score four goals. Plus, we defended a lot better in the second half.

The work to do

Our skill execution under real physical pressure from the very best team. We need to be able to absorb their physical pressure and not make unforced errors.

Trademark players

Shannon Nolan was outstanding again with 36 possessions and 12 clearances. Maisy Evans in the ruck battled really hard all day. Bella Iverach had her best game for the season as a half forward and won plenty of contested ball and had a hand in numerous goals.
