Colts fly the flag as injuries hit hard on Past Players Day

Luke Depiazzi
Luke Depiazzi was a shining light on a bleak afternoon for the Premier Men.

Past Players Day brought plenty of spirit but mixed results against Wests at The Canal.

Colts 1 flew the flag with a gritty win built on forward dominance. They sit in second place just a point shy of UQ.

In the first round of the Founders Cup, the Premier Women went down in a heartbreaker.

And it was a “calamity of epic proportions” for the Premier Men who had five players injured by the 20 minute mark of the first half.

The heavy loss has Mick Heenan’s men in fifth place and with some hard work ahead to remain in touch of a finals berth.

Acting General Manager of Rugby Sean Hedger wraps it all up in this week’s review.

Bull Sharks won 19-7

How it was won

Grit and determination to stick to the game plan. Everyone knew if they did their role correctly the team would get the rewards

What made you happy

Our forward pack’s dominance is laying the platform for the wins.

The work to do

We have to keep working on maintaining the ball for multiple phases coming out of our defensive half.

How it was lost

It was a heartbreaker as Wests scored in the dying minutes to snatch the victory.

What made you happy

We were very impressed by the courage shown by our younger players in facing a far more experienced Wests team.

It is about educating our forward pack on the how to maintain the ball for longer periods of play.

Hamish Roberts
Point scoring machine Hamish Roberts was an early casualty on a brutal afternoon for the Bull Sharks.

Bull Sharks lost 62-12

How it was lost

It was a calamity of epic proportions. We lost Jordan Lenac in the warmup. Then continued to have players injured at 3mins (Heremaia Murray), 8 mins (Dave Scollen), 11 mins (Hamish Roberts) and finally Dane Mason in the 20th min. By this time we were down by 30 points.

What made you happy

The team showed some heart in second half and managed to score a couple of tries.

The work to do

Our players need to prepare themselves physically at a higher level if we are to compete in Premier Grade.

Trademark Players
