Bull Sharks set sights on ninth straight UniSport title

It’s the quintessential student-athlete experience – and for the Bull Sharks it is a storied tradition.

Next week more than 7000 university students from across the country will descend onto the golden sands of the Gold Coast for the annual UniSport Nationals.

Bond’s team of 230 students will compete across 14 sports with everything from soccer to judo in the mix.

And the Bull Sharks will be looking to take home the Doug Ellis Per Capita Trophy for our ninth consecutive year, and the 13thtime since 2009.

The bar was set high in 2024 when Bond placed in the top 10 a remarkable achievement for a university less than a quarter the size of most rivals.

Leading the Bull Sharks are 2025 captains Matthew Hoang and Eva Colyer who are eager to don the blue and gold.

Hoang, who will play mixed netball, is back for his fourth UniSport Nationals. The Dietetics student is a netball club stalwart and says the club is a great way to play at a competitive level whilst also staying social.

“I’m ecstatic to be captain; I’m so excited to be representing Bond at UniSport,” Hoang said.

“I joined the netball social club when I first started at Bond and from then on, my passion just exploded.

“I’m keen to also use my knowledge from my course with the team, making sure we fuel up properly so we can get some wins.”

Bachelor of Sports and Exercise student Eva Colyer is hoping the touch footy sides will make it all the way this year.

With 50 students registered to play, the touch footy club is Bond’s biggest.

The men will be hungry for the gold medal after they fell just short to the University of Wollongong in last year’s division 1 grand final, in a nail-biting 7-6 showdown.

“I am super excited to see what our touch footy teams have to offer this year at the games,” Colyer said.

“We are taking four teams to the competition, so the energy and culture of our club is high going into the games.

“Sport is a large part of Bond and my experience at this uni, so being trusted to bring everyone together across different disciplines is both humbling and exciting.”
