Gavin Clarke’s apprenticeship is over.

Under master Rebecca Stower- he has enjoyed a front row seat in a program that blends elite performance with a strong culture.

On Sunday, he’ll be on the bench as assistant coach to Stower as the Bull Sharks chase a maiden Sapphire Series title.

Soon after, he’ll be stepping into her shoes as head coach of Queensland’s under-19s, a role that marks the next stage in his rapid development as one of the state’s brightest netball coaches.

Clarke has been central to Bond’s resurgence since their return to the Premier Netball League in 2023.

As assistant coach of the Sapphire side, head coach of Bond’s M-League squad and 18s State Titles mentor, he has immersed himself across every level of the program. The results are there for all to see — three seasons in, Bond are in a grand final.

“I just love netball and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of the campaign and carnival,” Clarke said of his Queensland under-19 appointment.

“For me, helping anyone be their best and being part of a journey that brings so much happiness to people is a real privilege. I’m excited to continue developing as a coach and a person through the Netball Queensland pathways.”

Bond University Head of Netball Kim Boland said Clarke had been a valued member of the Bull Sharks from the moment he joined.

“He’s played a pivotal role in the growth and success of our program. He brings a wealth of knowledge, both statistical and analytical, and pairs it with an incredibly positive and energising presence,” Boland said.

“We are proud of Gav and his recent appointment is a well-deserved recognition of his commitment and capability. This has been a long-term goal of his, and we’re thrilled to see him step into a leadership role at the national level in the female space.”

Clarke’s coaching journey has been built across a diverse resume — Downey Park, the Queensland Suns, the Australian Men’s U20s, and now Bond University. Netball Queensland’s Head of Talent and Development Roselee Jencke said his appointment showed the strength of the state’s pathway.

Lauren Mead will coach the 17 and under team, supported by former Queensland Firebird Amy Sommerville.

“Our underage programs are an essential part of the pathway, and we are delighted to have coaches of Gavin, Lauren, Amy and Carynne’s calibre leading our state teams,” Jencke said.
“They not only bring technical knowledge but also the ability to inspire and mentor young athletes as they take their first steps on the high-performance pathway.”
